Getting Out-of-State Vehicle Smogged in California?

Hello! We live in California and we're purchasing a 2008 gas motorhome from a private party in Oregon. If I understand DMV's registration requirements correctly, we'll have to smog it in California before we register it. We are wondering if we'll have any trouble getting this out-of-state motorhome to pass California smog emission requirements? Would a Fleetwood motorhome sold in Oregon have different smog equipment than one sold in California?

Thanks!
  • I recall all Ford trucks are now built to Kali emissions...I do not think they had any "49 state" trucks after about 1997.
  • If it is stock and passes the emissions test, you should be fine.

If the previous owner installed any after market performance parts that are not CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified the coach will fail the visual inspection and not even make to the emissions portion until you replace those items with stock or CARB certified parts.
  • Yes and no. There are federal emissions standards and California emissions standards. But since it has over 6000 miles and is over 6 months old California will accept it and smog it with federal standards. As long as all the emissions components are there that were on it when first sold.
I have done it with a few cars and never had an issue
