Goodyear g670 replacements

Well this morning I'm going to get the front tires replaced on my motorhome. I am putting the hancook ah12's. Next spring, I will replace the rest. Quick quests about the known riveting issues with these tires. What would cause the outer edge of the passenger side tire to River more than the driver side front? Just curious if I have a underlying problem that I should be aware of?
  • I had the two tires on my steering axle replaced yesterday with hancook ah12's. I was a little upset with the date code but they only had 3 of my size and I needed two of them. The date code was 4812. Cost me $960 out the door including new valve stems and equal. They were 275/70R22.5
  • Some coaches "River" and some don't....it gets really old hearing from people that say their Goodyears never rivered....that's lovely, you were lucky. They also think that the 50% of the population that had the POS Goodyear G670's river, must be doing something wrong.

I stayed on top of my Goodyears, like white on rice, with alignments, balancing and tire pressure checking, but they still rivered....two sets of them. I finally went to the Hankook AH12's and NEVER had another issue. My Goodyears on the rear NEVER rivered either!!!

Whatever causes some coaches to "River" and others not to, will probably never be solved....but there is a problem with the G670's. Not only did mine "River", they also had tread separations.

Hedgehog....don't waste money on alignments unless you haven't had one for a few years. The Hankooks will not only wear great, they'll ride better than the Goodyears. I'll never accept another new car or RV with Goodyear tires. I refuse to support a company that will not address an issue such as the "Rivering". It's like states that won't fix their roads, but do put up a sign Rough Road!!!! Idiots.
  • Our rig had the GY670s on it when we bought it in 2010. The date code said they were 2001 manufacture! After driving the 30 miles home from the seller's home, we took a 2-night trip to a local SP, just to get a feel for the living accommodations. It was about 70 miles each way.

My feel for the GY tires was not favorable. I found them to be noisy and rough riding. I decided to go all new (except for the spare wheel, which I don't think has ever been used.) Since we're in Les Schwab country and have been their customers for our car tires for over 25 years, we went to our in-town store and bought their top-of-the-line Toyos. The store manager found a set of six that had a date code less than 6 weeks before we bought them.

We're very pleased with the choice. They ride quietly, seem to not be upset by being stationary for long periods and are comfortable. We've only put 5500 miles on them in four years, which I think is fairly typical for recreational users.
  • We were told it was the alignment and had it aligned three times. We were told it was because there was not enough weight on the front axle.
We were told it was bad shocks. We were told a bunch of stuff, with straight faces.
Replaced the steer tires with Michelin steer tires with a decoupling grove near the edges. Since 11, I think we have had no problem other than a rebalance.
The rears are still GY670s and are doing well. I check the things every time we stop or start.
The GYs have a lot more UV protection in the compound and ten years is reasonable, if taken care of and protected from the scorching sun etc.
Michelins don't have as much UV protection and 5 years might be reasonable limit. They ride smoother because, of more compliant sidewalls etc. Steers fine. Will see when we change rears. May go with Hancock for price, if what we hear is good, on life, at that time. Five years rolls around, like tomorrow, these days, so I am not ready to buy new tires yet. Stop scaring me. :)
    You know I'm just kidding?

True "River" wear is not the outer edge. River wear is the 2nd rib in from the outer edge and may also be somewhat scolloped. When getting new tires it's always a good idea to have an alignment.
  • The GY's river because they are GY's!! You could have your alignment checked but usually it is nothing to do with your vehicle.

For what it's worth, my now 8 year old G670's haven't rivered. I did get the front end aligned including plenty of caster.

I pulled a set of G670's off that were 7 yrs old....not a sign of rivering. Never have had an alignment either in 13 years
  • It is the slope in the roads. They are tilted slightly to the outside (right) for drainage, putting more weight and wear on the right had side tires.

However, my Goodyear's rivered on both sides. One was no worse that the other.
