Got my Holiday Rambler home at my house. Jack problem

I got my HR home from my friend's house. I noticed that the jack light was on. but the jack is up. The light shows left rear is down, it is up and the light still is on. Also found where the Motor Generator is wired. it is wired into the house batteries and they are shot. So hopefully if I get new ones, that motor generator will work. I tried a vacuum cleaner plugged into it directly, didn't come on. I traced the wiring to the house batteries which has bad connections and the post is stripped so I can't tighten the wires. I think it will fire up once it has good power. Made it home without a problem. I went through the paperwork and the guy did a lot of maintenance. He replaced the engine with a crate engine. Weird.

As the other poster mentioned, Kick Down jacks are NEVER to be installed that swing forward. BUT, some model HWH kick down jacks CAN be mounted correctly and if the pivot stop bearing is missing or the stop is bad can swing forward. IS there room for the jack to swing rearward and clear any items on the chassis? IF the jack is mounted correctly and does swing forward, that is why the down switch will not close. Usually, you can use your hand to pull the jack DOWN vertical even when retracted. See if you can pull it down and then rearward. Look at how the other rear jack mount plate is and compare. Doug
  • if the left rear is mounted so that it is facing forward when retracted, it is mounted wrong. that needs to be changed.
the only way any kick down jack will FALL down and contact the road, is for the springs to break, AND the jack to not be fully retracted. if the jack has been correctly retracted, even when dropped down, the foot is about 4 inches above the surface. the park brake has to be set for the pump to operate and extend the jack, so it would take some unusual circumstance for this to happen.
as always, fluid level will not affect hwh jack retraction. this is done with springs, and the light is turned on and off with a magnetic switch, or on older kick down models, a mercury switch.
the jack down light on the older jacks may be a mercury switch located on the back side of the jack. to check this switch just jumper the harness connection with a wire to close the circuit. the light should go off. if it does, replace the switch. the 100/110 service manual shows how to do the diagnosis.

  • 1982. Are these kick up jacks. They swing backwards after the pad clears the ground? If so, then check the ground connections on that jack. The switch is on the jack with 2 wires. It is mounted with a hose clamp. Doug

You didn't mention which HR model or year, but if you have HWH jacks, check the fluid level in the tank. It takes MD3 transmission fluid. If the jacks won't completely retract, lubricate them with silicone spray. Spray the shinny part when they are extended. They should retract in under 15 seconds.

15 seconds??????????? That is not true. Doug
  • mine is a 1982 Imperial 33 I will check it out in the morning. Thank you for the reply.
