Grand Canyon to Malibu Beach

First time to drive any significant distance. Planning to visit Grand Canyon Railway Park staying a few days then proceeding from GC to Malibu Beach RV California in ONE DAY...Seems like a lot of miles and not knowing what to expect, wondering if anyone else has made this trip and If you forsee any issues for us other than simply the distance?

Don't worry about the 55 speed limit while towing, I set the cruise at 65 towing, and have never left the state. The CHP really doesn't pay attention to anyone doing the 65 speed limit when most are flying by you 80 anyway.

Try hitting the riverside area around 10-11 am and it should be mostly easy cruising to malibu, avoid anytime after 3:00 til 7:30

Love this post. Hopefully, the poster is also willing to pay your speeding ticket! I would love to see that documentation that the CHP will not pull over anyone doing 10 MPH above the speed limit.

  • You want to plan your route so that you arrive at Malibu no later than 3pm on weekdays to avoid traffic. From 3pm until 6:30pm you will have very heavy traffic from Los Angeles to Malibu.
  • We've done the trip many times and it can be done in one day with some planning. You'll want to avoid hitting major cities at rush hour especially when reaching the Los Angeles area. Best day to travel would be Saturday. Sunday,Tuesday and Wednesday would be the next best days. When towing- 55 to 60 MPH is possible without drawing the attention of the highway patrol.

Without major traffic it will be close to a 10 hour drive.

Fairly simple trip with good roads and a few grades along the way
  • The speed limit in CA while towing your toad is 55mph. So the usual map times are faster than you can go. You can drive faster but your extra time might be taken up talking to a nice CHIPS fellow.
