Help With small awning over the door.

So we're trying to leave the CG, and the small awning over the door won't retract. The motor is working. I believe what happened was I tried to retract in the middle of the night during a storm and may have held the switch in the extend position for a few seconds. Half asleep...no manual retraction available. Guide book says only to remove it by sliding it off and then tape the cover back on..?

  • The original manufacture is Fiamma in Italy. But they have a USA operation in Florida. Go to FiammaUSA.com. I have had good luck getting parts for my Dometic Oasis manual door awning. Dometic was of no help as usual, but I stumbled across Fiamma and they had what I needed. The phone number is 407-672-0091.
  • Looks like I have it narrowed down to the roller itself. I took the gear out and the shift is not broken and it locks into the end of the roller tight. In one direction you can turn it by hand and it stops tight. In the other direction it just keeps spinning not sure why or if that is the real problem.
  • Finally got to bench test the awning using a small 12 V battery charger. With the positive hooked up to the red wire on the awning motor it started to extend it but was pulsating. Thinking the polarity needed reversed I switched the wires and it extended fine. But when I reverse it back to retract it I get nothing but noise from the motor. I removed the gear cover from the motor and the gear is turning in both directions just fine depending on polarity..reverse is out and strait is in or at least that's what seems to be happening. Any ideas where the issue might be? This is a domestic F45i oasis model number 973EE56.105U
  • A word of caution. I was parked in an RV park in Houston a few years ago, and had the same problem. I was able to crank it in. I had a respected and RV park recommended RV tech come to the park. He advised me I needed a whole new unit. I took it apart, applied grease where it looked appropriate, and it has worked fine since !
  • Yes this site is a goldmine of information. I also zip tied it shut and tossed it in the basement. I will trouble shoot it later when I get to WA and have some time.
  • Great how this post worked...the OP came on line at 8:09am, got two good answers by "ua40j" and "jorbill2or" and was back on the road by 10:39am. Only a 2.5 hour delay and repair, plus the OP came back with an account of the repair and a thanks.

    Good Job by all.
  • Ended up just taking it off 2 screws on the back cover disconnected wire nuts and pushed it up to break the caulking seal. Slide right off. Just had to borrow 2 ladders. We're back on the road. Thanks to all for info.
  • Mine quit just a few week ago ?.. push it in while someone gathers the fabric neatly inside the cover .. I used large (2ft ) zip ties I carry one in the front .. Slide behind the front 4-5 inches in and the same in the rear.
The whole unit does SLIDE off. On mine there was two screws that kept it from sliding .. And of course the wiring
When I looked it up these units gearing fail regularly ! On my case the repair guy said it was a electric problem ( not enough amperage to run in but unough to run out ) I don't know but it works now so I won't argue ??
  • You don't say what the brand is, but I think they are the same type whether Carefree or Dometic.

On mine, the drive sheared the connector between the motor and the roller. The arms being spring loaded, opened the awning all the way and of course, it wouldn't retract electrically or manually because the connector had sheared.

If that is the case, there are two options. 1 as you already know is to remove it completely. That would entail a) disconnecting the electrical wiring harness, b) removing the screws that hold the awning in the rail as well as c) the screws that lock the awning against the rail/wall. Then slide the awning off the rail.

And 2) compress the awning arms and fold the awning fabric in such a way that you can secure it with tie wraps or wire. But you have to be very careful that you don't leave an opening in the front of the fabric to catch wind. On my Carefree, I was able to roll up the fabric and secure it with tie wraps.

If there is an opening, wind will find it.....and it will remove the awning for you which you may not like.
