- MagillaGorillaExplorerWhen driving my car down south: I usually do the trip of 24 hours straight through with the only stops to be for fuel and bio breaks. Sometimes when I don't feel like doing the 24 hours straight through I break it up into two days. About 18 hours on the first day and the remaining 6 the next day. We've made this trip about 15 times.
If I take our new MH down there for Christmas I was hoping to do two 12 hour days. My fear is that I wont be able to make the distance in 24 hours and it will be more like 30 due to the slower pace. If that is the case I can put a few extra hours into the first day. We will leave by 5:00 AM and I could drive until 8:00 or 10:00 that night if I need to. - Jayco-noslideExplorerAn idea day for us would be to breakfast around 8, hit the road around 9 and drive till around 4:30; so around 7-8 hrs. Of course various circumstances don't always fit that schedule.
- Winnebago_BobExplorerDepends on the road, the traffic, the weather, my mood.
Some days we can drive all day. Other days we stop after just a few hours.
We don't have a set rule. We travel on our own schedule since retirement. Since we hit 50, we've relaxed even more. - mabynackExplorer III usually drive about 8 hours with short breaks every two hours. I start looking for an RV Park at about 4:00 p.m.
- mfox20ExplorerI am still working as well but make at least one 2200 mile round trip each year from Fort Worth to Bristol, TN and back over about 10 days.
It usually takes about 17 hours total and I have routinely done about 10-12 hours the first day each way. As others have said, it usually depends on traffic flow. Not had any issues with the longer days.
However, I did try a different approach 2 years ago by driving it in 3 days and it was much more relaxing, less stressful and pure joy only driving about 6 hours per day.
Will be enjoying taking my time very soon!!!!
Michael - FULLTIMEWANABEExplorerWhen kids and of course us were much younger and working around tight vacation only time we would leave 3.30pm first day and stop for the night between midnight and 2am in the morning depending how the driver felt - mini stops for half hour to hour in-between for fuel and supper break. Next day hit road by 8am latest and would do remaining 8 to 10 hours driving times, with breakfast, lunch and fuel stop for half hour to hour during. That was because of limited time constraints, getting out of cold weather and wanting to not be hammering it for more than one official day of our vacation time down and same coming back.
Now we are older and hubby and I travel alone with less time restrictions we tend to do maybe six to 8 hours the first afternoon/evening travelling and maybe the same the next day during winter weathers to get to the warm asap. If summer months sometimes we only get a couple hours up the road and amble around.
Number of hours folks drive varies hugely depending on individuals situations, it's as varied an answer as the question folks ask about how much does it cost to RV full time. - SteveRuffExplorerWe like to get out on the road early so typically try to leave the campground by 7:00 at the latest. We will go a couple of hours then look for a rest stop or roadside park to stop and make some breakfast and walk the dog. If we are making our destination by 1:00 or 1:30 we will push on after breakfast to there. If it is farther away we will stop for lunch between 12:00 and 1:00. I like to be in the campground, hooked up, with satellite dish locked in by at least 4:00. If it looks like it will be later than that we make a two day trip out of it.
- dahkotaExplorerSometimes, we drive one hour and other times we drive ten. It depends more on the weather, the road, and the traffic than on anything else. Too much of bad roads, weather, or other drivers make a one hour drive seem like 10. We really count it more by miles than hours. Today we will drive 110 miles. Last week we drove 195 miles. Our shortest jump was 36 miles. Our longest was 420 miles. The 110 miles today will probably take better than three hours - traffic, stop lights, slow roads...
We LIKE to drive from one place of interest to another. We hope they are close together but sometimes we get a wild hair and like a change of scenery. - Crazy_RayExplorer6 to 8 hours about 500 miles for me.
- stevewiseExplorerI don't have a class A but I drive 8-10 hours with a break every 3-4 hours this is why I do not have a larger fuel tank it works out perfect stop, fuel, stretch, eat and walk the dog.
