- garyhauptExplorerThe only consolation, is that because it'll be done at a Ford shop, should there be any 'issues', you have that covered. A local shop can be fine, but not when you are far from home and something goes sideways.
Gary Haupt - j-dExplorer IIRock, I'm sure they put 'em in the tank for Cost and Ease of (factory) Assembly. But there IS a practical advantage. An in-tank WILL pressurize the full fuel system RIGHT NOW once you turn the Key On. Also, there's a practical advantage: Much less tendency for gasoline under Pressure to Vapor Lock than when under Suction.

Thanks Gary, I was afraid it was going to be in that region....
Anyone else paid for this lately?
$1,200 in Georgia 4 years ago at Ford Dealership. Had an almost full tank of gas so paid for the time to drain it.
I want to meet the IDIOT engineer that decided to put the fuel pumps 'inside' the fuel tank. :R
Dating myself but years ago it took all of 15 minutes to change a fuel pump out on a vehicle. - Teacher_s_PetExplorer$800-$900 Sounds about right. Paid $750 in '05 for a pump change out on a '98 Ford F53 chassis, paid $850 on a '04 Chevy 3500 Express chassis in '13 for the same change out. Both on the road, both required dropping the tank.
- D_E_BishopExplorerBoth our pumps were declared DOA while trying to get our smog certificate. Cost about twice that with the pumps, carb work and smog check. Of course as JRandall noted we had better than half a tank, about fifty gallons.
Of course the shop replaced the engine pump first and then realized there was a regulator in the line back by the tank, which led them to figure, extra large tank in rear, with rail extentions and a Holley pressure/flow regulator meant in tank pump which they swear wasn't in the standard tanks on 1989 Chevy P32 chassis. - JRandallExplorerGary's cost is about the same as I have encountered. Can be a little less at an independent shop, but you are already at the Ford dealership. It's not hard to do, but much easier with the right lifts and such. Let me guess...you just filled up, so the tank will weight several hundred pounds. That's why we don't do it at home.
