How to clean Toilet bowl seal?

Our seal is not holding a water seal very long. Tried to clean it with a small brush and soft scrub without success. What techniques work? Pulling the stool and replacing the valve unit is more of a job than I'd like right now.

    Ours was not holding water. I cleaned the bowl and flapper and grooves.

    Turn off the water.

    Put on disposable gloves.

    Open flapper and put a generous amount of the Plumber's Grease around the seal.

    We had to do this a couple times for about a week...then all was well.

    It has held water for over a year now with no problems.
