20. Take exit 3A to merge onto US-20 E - RoadpilotExplorerI'd also recommend ct1964's route. It will be the most hassle free and possibly the shortest in time. It will also minimize tolls. You'll pay a toll on the Tapp going one way, another on the Mass Pike, another on rt95 in NH and another on the Maine Turnpike. I don't know what you are driving so can't tell you how much. Also depends on where in Maine you are going.
- Community AlumniI hate I95 through Washington and on north. We go west off 95 at Fredericksburg (Va) and take highway 17 to 66 east then onto 81 north. We then take I78 east to 287 and onto 87 north.
- NCWriterExplorerWhy not skip the whole east coast corridor by taking 77 to 81 through the Shenandoah Valley all the way to the Scranton area. Then you can cut over east, go around Boston and shoot on north into Maine. We did it that way last year and were glad.
May have been slightly more miles but you do save those tolls, at least below Maine.
Chuck's route good, too, we came home via Warrenton down to 95. - ct1964upsExplorer

Our first long RV trip. What are te challenges of taking I-95 to Maine. Toll costs.

not sure where in Ga you are coming from, but I go up 95 past Richmond,Va if I'm coming from the east side of Ga to Va rt 17 that i take up thru Warrenton,Va to 66 to 81.....then stay on 81 past Harrisburg,Pa to 78 east to 287 north in NJ to Sufferin,NY 87 north to 84 east in Newburgh,NY....the only tolls will be up to here is 87 north ..small fee....and the Newburgh bridge ..cheapest bridge to cross the Hudson on...then stay on 84 thru Conn to 90 east in Mass...toll road..cpl dollars to 495 north all the way to the New Hampshire border to pickup 95 to Maine...great trip...enjoy...Chuck - LobstahExplorerAgree with Tappanzee. We take that route a lot. You have choices at that point. You can take 684 up to 84E, which cuts out all of the Rt 95 hassles/issues through Ct. Rt 84 gets a little congested going through Hartford, depending on time of day, so avoid rush hours. Rt 84 dumps you right onto the Mass pike, over to Rt 495, then up through the Northeast corner of Mass, where it meets up with Rt 95 again heading into a short stretch in NH then into Maine.
This is not a "toll free" route, but is fairly direct.
Best of luck and Safe Travels,
Jim - Executive45Explorer IIIJust program your gps to avoid toll roads and enjoy the scenery the back roads provide....:B...only toll we've paid this year has been to cross the Mackinac Bridge which is kinda hard to avoid..$19 bucks..:W....Dennis
- bullydogs1ExplorerYou do not have to go thru NYC at all...95 up to 287 then north to NY Thruway..then east to Tappan Zee Bridge then use 287 there and 10 miles later you are in CT at exit 2...you don't want to get stuck on GWB...
- hmknightncExplorerYick with an RV. Have to go through NYC, not fun. That trip is well over 24 hours driving so considering I would do the following
- Go to Lancaster Pa, Visit the Amish for a couple days. Still have to use I95 but getting around Richmond and Washington DC is not too bad
- Go to Upstate NY, like Saratoga Springs using I87
- Then to Rutland Vt or somewhere like that
- Then to Maine via Vermont and New Hampshire
Probably adds 4 to 6 hours driving time but lots more interesting to see and do on the trip
