We do not make our own ice at home because I don't like ice made with city water and I don't like ice that has a refrigerator taste. We buy a small bag of ice occasionally rather than making our own, even at home.
Additional cabinet space in the kitchen would be more valuable than the little ice maker. But the ability to take a little more frozen food (soups, chili, pasta sauce, etc.) from home would be useful, so long as there was otherwise enough cabinet/pantry space.
