icemaker

After two trips to CW and a three week wait for a replacement ice maker we picked up our new Winnie and took it home. I ran the generator for 24 hours in the driveway and the temp in the freezer dropped to 5 degrees. I flipped the arm down and waited another 6 hours for ice. No joy.

We gave up on this CW. In addition to their being unable to make simple repairs, they were rude and short with me if they ever called back. I will take the MH to Apalache service Center near Atlanta for future repairs.

We are on the road and after 40 hours, still no ice. I opened the compartment up and took a look. There was an unplugged wire with a male connector that was marked with tape which said "bad ice maker gear , ordered replacement 10/16. There was another wire with a female connector. They were two different colors. Expecting sparks, I took a chance and plugged and unplugged the connectors. No sparks. I plugged them back in and by the time I got back inside the ice maker was full of water. It had not had water before. I have checked a few times and the water in the ice maker is chilling quickly and is not overflowing so I think I solved the problem. The tech just forgot to plug it back in.

I am happy that my ice maker is working but thoroughly disgusted with almost a month of waiting , no call backs and when I did keep calling until I reached the service manager he was rude and short. That is behind me. To my knowledge, the rest of the systems are all working. I won't go back to CW, ever.

I paid $5000 for a Good Sam warranty. I mentioned Apalache RV repair in another thread here and a Good Sam moderator told me to be sure that all repairs were authorized by Good Sam if I did not have them done by a CW dealer. I would like some clarification.

First, Winnebago service told me that this service center was excellent and that they had heard nothing but positive feedback.

The person at Apalache told me that they did Good Sam warranty work and liked the GS service plans because GS paid quickly and additionally they had a good working relationship with GS. I am curious about what the GS moderator meant by telling me that I had to check with GS before authorizing a repair. Please explain what my options are a bit more clearly. I would expect that the service center would clear the repair with GS. Am I wrong? Do I need written authorization before any repair is agreed to?

I am done with CW and from what I read here I'm not alone. Please advise.
  • We got a stand-alone icemaker at Sams Club for under $100 to use in the MH instead of using freezer space. Works great lots of ice, and when it quits, will be trashed and replaced. NO contact with CW at all!

Doing that here. The Freezer unit was nice but the additional space is nicer, not to mention the reduction in FROST.

What model ? Do you have to store the ice in the freezer (not the ice maker) ?

If you look at the reviews on Amazon for Igloo or NewAir, there seems to be a lot of failures in <1 year.
  • Not sure, but I think any extra warranty coverage you have whether Good Sam or another company will require that you notify them of a problem and get authorization to have a repair made and approval of the facility where you are going to have the repair done. This is not unusual and you would have the same thing for an extended warranty on a house, car, appliances or anything you purchase the extra warranty policy for. You should get your Good Sam Warranty paperwork work out and read it. There should be instructions on how to file for a repair under the warranty.
  • No space for another ice maker. Those units do make ice really fast but it is aerated so badly that it doesn't last long.

Thank you doxiemom, I figured as much and that's not an issue for me. I guess I miss the distinction between CW and anybody else. It would be my expectation that CW would have to get approval as well. Not sure about the difference.
  • My unit, as noted, does not aerate. The cubes are the same size/shape and such
just like the cubes you get out of the fridge, in my case 12 at a time in about 7 minutes. I think the smaller units do 9 cubes per minute if I remember right.
No water to hook up, just add water as needed. It holds enough water to fill the storage capacity of the unit in a few hours.
Yes it's a good sized unit to store in an RV. We place ours on the floor out of the way and it works great for us and we don't have to chase ice.
Just another option for those of us that like ice and perhaps don't have an icemaker. In my opinion, with all the rigs and brands of fridges that we have had, an icemaker just taxes the cooling unit that may be running at max or close on a hot day anyway.
