If you were a Snowbird, where would you stay?

I'm retiring in exactly 28 days and will be planning to spend the winter somewhere in the Southern USA. I LOATHE snow and hate being cold. I don't consider the temp to be warm until it hits 75. 90 is comfortable.

What is your favorite place to hibernate during winter months?

  • We did Palm Springs 3 yrs. ago and Orlando, Fl. this past winter. Both are great. Palm Springs, more expensive, course it's a long ways from Ga. Fl. was great and we will return for 2014.
  • I like Hawaii too but my poor old Chieftain wouldn't float that far :B

I'm surprised you don't see RVs in Hawaii. It seems that would be a natural fit. Wouldn't it be great to wake up beside the ocean on a hot, sunny Hawaiian morning. Ahhhhhhh.......

Personally I like the warmth but I don't like it really hot; I also don't like crowds. For us Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) fits our needs through the winter months.
  • For temperatures that warm, most of the time, in the Continental USA, consider South Florida. Warm winters are why 2 1/2 million people have fled to Miami-Dade county, and 1.8 million in Broward County.

No guarantees, however, that it will not get much colder for a short time. I have enjoyed January temperatures in the 50s in the Keys, when I was fleeing the frost hitting my home in Orlando.

Southwestern desert temperatures, Texas and Arizona, can be cool when the sun goes down and are subject to even colder cold snaps.

San Diego has pretty consistent "nice" weather, but with temperature moderation from the ocean, you will not regularly see 90 F winter temperatures.

My favorite place in the U.S. for getting away from winter is Hawaii. But like most tropical places with oceanic influence it is not as warm as 90 F. To get that hot you need to be inland.
  • Palm Springs, CA. Warmer than even the deserts in most cases during the winter and no occasional hurricane force winds either. Lots of things to do too. And some BLM areas if you want that too.

Key West, but it's a long way from Vancouver. South Florida probably has the warmest winter WX and the prices reflect that. There is a Snowbird section so break the mode of only posting in Class A for more responses.
  • The Rio Grande valley in south Texas probably has the warmest temperatures. Another warm spot is Yuma, AZ.
  • Florida seems to fit the bill for most snowbirds.

I would go to southern AZ or California deserts. It will get cold but most of the winter months it's shorts and tee shirt weather in the daytime.

Lots of BLM land to choose from for boondocking or less expensive RV Parks if you prefer amenities.
