Installing a Solid Rear Mud Flap

What is the best way to install a solid rear mud flap. Should it be bolted so it does not swing or should it be install on chains where it can swing?
Thanks for any and all comments

  • I bolted mine to a 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" angle and mounted with a couple of links of
chain to RV frame as picture shows. I didn't use a backing aluminum plate however as seen in the picture. Be sure it has 4" to 5" clearance from the ground.
  • I mounted a hard rubber one on my coach 11 years ago, I bolted it to a piece of aluminum angle iron at the back cap. It's been there all 11 years without a problem. I keeps big stuff off of the toad. Be sure to mount it 4 inches off the road so that it will not drag. The toad does still get dirty - it does not prevent the water born dirt that gets kicked up all around the back of the coach from getting on it. But I do think that it keeps rocks off of it. I know for a fact that when I had a blowout, it kept the tire tread off the toad. For those who say it kicks up rocks, I think that they mount it too low so that it drags when the coach dips on rough roads. Mine is 4 inches off the ground and has not been a problem. As to hanging up on curbs, etc., I have not experienced any problems. On the few occasions where it crossed something like that, it just swings up and over it and drops back down. Also, I have a slight incline up into my storage building and it does drag a bit going in and out, but again, it has not been a problem.
  • Put it on chains and be sure to follow the directions on how high to place it over the road. Lower is NOT better as a dragging or very low flap will kick up gravel into the toad or trailer behind. I also recommend using a piece of 1 1/2" x 1/8" angle at the top of the flap. The solid bar furnished with some flaps will bend easily and the flap will not hang right. The light weight angle will hold the flap straight and will look a lot better after a few trips.
  • I never added one to this RV (DP) I had the hard rubber type and the brush type. I would not put a firmly mounted one on as your going to back over curbs, etc and it would bend. I would probably go with the brush type.
  • I was going to put a large mud flap on my Class A until I saw some photos and posts on here. There are photos of those mud flaps kicking up rocks and causing a lot of damage to toads. And they weren't dragging on the ground either. The people who had them also said the back of the motorhome and the toad still get dirty even with the flap. Because of that info I decided not to get one.
