Insurance on a Class C motorhome

We have our home and auto through the same insurance company. We have our RV through Allied (Nationwide Company) that we got through CW. When we bought our first RV we had it stored at the beach. Our home/auto insurance company said they wouldn't cover it there. So we stuck with the Allied. This year when we traded in the TT for the Class C, CW tried through GMAC/National General. It was too high. We told them to go through Allied like we had before. Half the price. Be sure to shop around. If you go through CW, ask them to quote you through other companies. CW just brokers. They default to the GMAC/National General. Perhaps a better kick back for them.

All of our insurance, home, automobile, liability is with the same agent. The only thing not with him is medical, which I have through work.

I use The Hartford through AARP. In 2004 we wrecked a brand new TT and TV and I was pleased with their response. Have not found a lower price for insurance. We insure the MH, the car and our pickup through them. I do suspend the collision insurance on the MH during the winter, just takes a phone call.

What you need for insurance will be determined by how you plan to use the motorhome.. If you are full-timing then you might need higher contents insurance to cover the things you have in the motorhome. You also might need personal liability as if it is a home. You can also try Good Sam insurance but other policies are less expensive.In New York State Farm is the only company I know of that will let you go down to just comprehensive while the unit is being stored WITHOUT turning in your plates and going through the reregistration hassle. Are you planning to get GOOD Sam roadside assistance? If so then you do not need the assistance provided by the insurance company.

Long story short is YOU need to figure out what you need before you shop. Therefore the first time out you might want to talk to your local agent. You will find out quickly enough if he is knowledgeable agent or just sells policies. He should educate you and give you coverage to fit your needs. Then in 6 months you can shop price knowing you probably have the correct coverage for your situation.

When we bought our first motorhome, the salesman recommended Gilbert RV insurance. They handle several companies. We bought Progressive. Each year when the bill comes in, I take it to my State Farm agent who has our cars and home. Each year my agent recommends that we stay with Progressive, because they can't touch our price. I have not asked any other agent, but it seems I am getting a good deal.
