Inverter cabinet upgrade sealant and sound deadening

I will be upgrading my inverter and charger to a Magnum 3012 inverter. While I have everything out of the inverter cabinet I plan on adding some sound deadening mats to the roof, floor, and back wall of the cabinet. The door side will remain un-matted along with the wall with the vents. I will not be blocking any vents and I want to ensure there is enough heat transfer out of the cabinet still. Anyone done this before? Any issues with doing this?

Also, currently, in each hole the wires enter the compartment there is a heavy black sealant that blocks all the holes and keeps the cables from scraping the edges. I will need to remove this in order to run the larger cables I need to install. What sealant do I use for this when I reinstall? This stuff is probably decades old and feels like solid rubber.

Thanks!
  • Someone's running a bot here? ^^^

Anyway, thanks for the replies. I think I will do this for the holes:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AXM5RM/ and I will grab some GeoCell Pro flex if I need to further seal them. I can't do wire glands because it would require patching the holes (they are 2") and making new ones which is much more work then I would prefer, although I agree that would be best.

I mounted a temp gauge in the cabinet and will do some tests to see if I need to add a fan. Probably still a couple weeks away from the install as I'm still waiting for my 4/0 cables to come in and enough time to do the install. I'll take a bunch of pics and post it when I do.
  • I find it highly unlikely those are truly variable speed inverter units, as the packaging shown does not make the same inverter claim as the web offer. However, I am certain they actually could make you a inverter type window unit, especially if they already make split type inverter units. But for just one or two units, cost would be very high. You would have to be very specific what went into those units, the quietness, the efficiency, input voltage, dimensions and weight all must be agreed upon, and shipping costs calculated.
  • Hi,

I have the Magnum 3012 and if you load it up the dual fans are fairly loud--but it is almost a "white noise" sort of sound.
  • Black Geocel Pro Flex is often used around wire penitrations on new coaches. I am not familliar with the 3012 but as Gordon said, the 2812 makes very little noise. I need to open my bay door to even hear it operating.
  • Be sure to NOT turn the inverter off after running a heavy load. Doing so will shut down the cooling fans. If the load was high enough the inverter can catch on fire. DAMHIK
  • For the holes, are they round or oddly shaped? If it's the latter, are you opposed to patching and sealing those holes, and drilling new ones? If you drill some new holes in a standard size, you can get nice neoprene or silicone cable glands to fit them. Those will seal around the cables without having to use a caulk or sealant.

x2 agree with Ductape ... my Magnum does get hot when it's doing heavy charging, or running the microwave / air conditioner ... might want active cooling for this storage bay, like fans on the vents. Noctua makes a great high pressure industrial fan, waterproof and everything. Get the 24 volt model and run it at 12 volt for low noise and long life.
  • Silicon caulk is good for sealing cable penetrations and protecting from chafing. Monitor the temperatures for a while in case the new inverter throws off more heat.
  • Haven't installed it yet. The only reason I'm trying to quiet the cabinet down is cause my current converter/inverter have a loud fan noise that is right under my headboard (two cabinets below my head while sleeping), so I want to proactively quiet it if possible.
  • My Magnum 2812 inverter is totally silent. If yours is making a lot of noise you should contact support.

    Maybe I'm misreading?
