ISL Exhaust Manifold Leak - How far can I drive it?

Have a 2003 ISL370 CAPS engine. Found a 'fresh' small exhausts leak from the manifold gasket of #3. Believe it blew about 700 miles ago, when I heard a new noise climbing a grade on 395.

I inspected the engine well looking for loose belts, hose clamps, tensioner, cracked exhaust manifold, or leaking manifold gasket. Saw no evidence when I inspected, probably about 70-90 miles after I first heard the new sound. So we pressed on, no longer hearing the sound, and are now in West Colorado. An inspection yesterday, revealed the dark grey blow by staining around top rear corner of #3 gasket.

Want to get it repaired, but also want to choose the shop that does it. Any opinions on how many miles I could drive with this currently small exhaust gasket leak? I'd monitor, watch turbo boost, which has been fine. Don't want to risk damaging anything else, but no wire harnesses around the area, or fuel lines, and again, both myself and another mechanic feel it is a very small leak.

But, figured some you with more experience with blown manifold gaskets, could share your thoughts on this. (I recall one gent I met in Fairbanks, AK last year, had a leak on his ISC, said he would monitor it but repair it himself when he got back to Montana... )

Opinions please. and TIA,
Smitty

  • The problem is if it's big enough it will lower the turbo drive pressure and you will over-fuel for a given throttle setting. This results in dangerously high EGT - enough in some cases to damage a piston.
If you have an actual hole I would probably not drive it. If it's just cracked your probably OK but I would stay away from any long steep hill
  • Any chance you have a loose bolt at that spot that you could re-torque? At least until you can get a more permanent fix.
