it might seem odd

We're sitting here in Hawaii on vacation dreaming of our first camping trip next spring :B. I hate cold weather!! It's our 30th anniversary and the wifey deserved it.

Anything I should see on the big island while here? Doing the island driving tour, luau, historic dinner cruise. Tried talking her into the helicopter ride - nope.

  • As mention earlier, go on a snorkeling boat ride. Caption Cook state park is a good cove that boat rides go to. The DW wasn't sure, but once she got in, with a tube, got the face mask on and was showed how the snorkel worked, she loved it. The one we went on had a noon BBQ and was great. There is a hotel on the cliffs, that the giant Manta Rays come into at night to feed. There are night snorkeling boat rides near the Rays also, if you are really brave.

    Enjoy!
  • Happy anniversary, you lucky beach bums! We're in between ice storms here in NoVa
(and in between power outages, as well).

There are several very cool lava tube formations on Hawaii. Google Thurston (very easy,
short hike) and/orPua Po'o (love the name) lava tubes.

Also, there are various outfitters to take you on rainforest/dryforest birding tours, if you're
into that kinda thing, but some of them can be kinda pricey.

Of course, these suggestions are just in case you want to get off your beach chairs.
Wouldn't blame you if you didn't.

Have fun and eat lots of macadamia nuts for me - Mahalo!
  • Did the helicopter on Kauai, loved it. But even better was a glider flight on Oahua. Original Glider Rides out at Dillingham Airfield on the North Shore. What impressed me was that the pilot would walk out to the glider and step out of his sandals and into the sailplane. Once he landed he stepped out of the sailplane and into his sandals without his feet ever touching the pavement. He did this multiple times except for once. I questioned him on this and he said he had to stop short to keep from running over his tow rope. I love small planes and have solo'ed several times in powered parachutes but this was by far the most fun. They can take two passengers side by side in the rear seat. Now if you couldn't talk the DW into a helicopter ride, I would love to listen in on you explaining about a non powered flight.
  • We were there in 2006, and being too cheap to do the helicopter ride, we did the airplane tour. You don't get as close to the volcano, but you get to see the whole island. Also less weather dependent.
Our pilot had to relay a message back to the helicopter base when one of the helicopters had to set down in a field to wait out the weather which was preventing him from landing at Hilo to get fuel.
  • IMHO your wife is very smart not to ride in a helicopter! Rode in a lot of them in Vietnam! Way too many moving parts for me! I've been curious about RV's in Hawaii! Do you see a lot of RV's going down the highway in Hawaii?
  • Spend some time at Hawaii Volcano National Park. We were there in April and it was fascinating. Friends of ours took a boat ride to see the lava hitting the ocean - their video was incredible.
  • If she won't go on the helicopter tour make sure you take her snorkeling....it's an unforgettable experience....Dennis
  • The helicopter ride in Kauai was amazing. Think Disneyland (as a kid) times 1000 and it's real. I went with a friend back in the day. I don't know that I could convince my wife to do it. However, if I caught her in the right mood...
  • We went to Kauai and to Mauai and I was the biggest scardy cat ever but my husband said I would regret it forever if I missed such an opportunity as seeing paradise from the air. He was right. This is a must do. A luau. A helicopter tour, snorkel tour and the wales may be migrating. I'm a little envious. In Fort Collins Colorado where I think the high was 15 degrees. :D
