Thanks everyone for your help. It ended up being the fuel shutdown solinoid. So the fuel theory was correct.

look at this parts manual. Scroll down and I think the spring you are talking about is shown connected.

Thank you for your response. I have the generator hooked up to a 5 gallon gas can with clear hose so I can see whats happening. I took the fuel pump apart cleaned new screen. The generator was running fine but it started running erratic and then would shut off. I have a small spring at one end that comes straight out and it's not hooked to anything. It's on the right side.

Almost positive this is a fuel problem. Does it have a clean fuel filter?
