Kwikee Step

NO limit switches in kiwikee steps
the control board shuts the motor off, when current reaches the set limit
such as going out or coming up, it it hits something, OR Binds Up
it stops

power off..clean and lube all the swinging joints and the rotating ARM that moves the step

if that doesn't fix it, then you might have broken some teeth on the gear that mates the motor to the gear box

i just replaced both motor and gear box a on ours a few weeks ago, got everything on amazon

on ours the swing arm ball linkage was worn out, and the mating gear had broken teeth,
so i bought new motor and new gear box
now it works great, like a brand new step

Lube it, worked wonders on mine, fixed it right up.

Brian, the motor can be purchased much cheaper directly from the manufacturer. I'll have to look up who made it, they are in OR and if memory serves me right the guy to talk to was butch. The odds are if you have a late model rig the motor Mr Wizard suggested is correct but it really depends. If you have a bad motor and it is all aluminum, the one with the phenolic housing won't work and it becomes a******shoot as to which one will fit. If lubing doesn't fix it, come back on with a new post and give series and year of steps(RV) and what the motor looks like. Aluminum or phenolic gear housing on the motor. Then you will find out what you need.

A poster "PANDK", on July 28, 2012 claims the Kwikee step motor is a 1986-1995 Ford Taurus Left Front window motor...NAPA BK665-1395, that would inferr a quite considerable $ savings.

I don't know....just threw it out there. Anyone do this replacement? Does it work?

You have a 11 year old RV. The odds are ALL the linkages need Liquid wrench spray. Take the cotter key out of the extend/retract shaft and pull the pin. A CORRECTLY loose step, you can push to retract with 1 finger all the way, when you let go, it should fall down open quickly. The easiest way to get the lube to penetrate is to take it loose like I described, spray all the linkages and then manually force the step closed and open until the lube penetrates the linkages and then falls open and closes with that one finger. Then reinstall the linkage and pin and cotter pin. Doug

I was having the same problem that you are experiencing. I took it apart and cleaned everything up lubed everything and reassembled it. I have had no more problems since then. I did do some research for a new motor at that time and for my Kwikee 2 step the motor was exactly like the Ford Taurus front driver side window lift motor. I looked at NAPA and Autozone and both were much cheaper than the dealer. Autozone also came with a lifetime warranty. JMO

Ok, thanks for the info, I'll be heading over to the motorhome in a little while. I'll give it a good lube job and see how it does. If I'm still having problems I'll get some additional info. Thanks for all the help.

Just make sure it's turned off or unplug the connectors it can do some damage you get your hand or arm caught in it.

John Wayne is correct. Working on steps is a very dangerous job if you do not know what can happen. Very easy to get your hand or arm in a pinch situation if you have power running to the steps.

I think it should be noted, the motor itself, rarely fails
The current limiting of the control board protects the motor
What usually fails, is in the gearing or linkage
There is an aluminum housing motor available, which is an exact match for my old motor, but I needed a new gear box, so I bought a matching set, even if the mating gear had not been broken, the new gear box would not mate with my old motor
If lubing does not fix it, then remove motor and gear box and examine them before ordering any replacement
