I got drafted back when there was a draft and I did my time and got out. The army is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. That said I agree, if every kid went and did their time a lot of people would be a lot better off.

I also believe that going thru military basic training would stop almost all of the whining & complaining that we are now faced with from the younger generations....

Agreed. I like the Israeli system. Mandatory service for virtually everyone.

The military I was in has changed so much, I would not recognize it today. Back in the first part of the century they stopped inspecting the barracks, they have a cleaning service for all the janitorial, same for basic, no KP, no Laundry, no landscaping, it is all contracted out. I am not sure the boot camp of today would instil the same discipline we used to have. So much has changed.
Today is to remember those who have perished protecting their country, and those who have returned and due to the horrors of war could not deal with returning to a civilized world. No matter when they served, when taps is called, their duty is complete.

Dennis, that's a good one. I wondered where you were going with this post.

I never did serve, being just young enough to register right before the war ended. I have infinite respect for those who did serve. My father-in-law did three tours with Force Recon...to get away from a woman!!! My own father climbed power poles in Korea.

My friends who are active, wonder about the decisions. The camouflage changes, and cutbacks in their benefits grate on some. The VA debacle is another biggie. The budget cuts seem to be in all the wrong places.

I did my time during VN and my Son retired after doing 25 years. Now our Grandson-in-law is on his third tour. Too bad our government does not support the troops as much as the American people do.
