The IRS could mostly care less where you state of residency is. State departments of revenue and some local departments of revenue are the ones to be concerned with. Doing the things you mentioned in your post will certainly add credibility to your residency choice.

My neighbor next door to me did this to save on taxes and license fees on his newer motorhome, he has to buy me a fifth of JD every month so I don't turn him in..

You need to google full-time forums. I think you will find you are way off the mark here.

OP has said he's a FULL TIMER. "IF" that is TRUE, then he can pick and choose whatever State he wants to declare as his "State of Residency". He could simply choose Monatana and NEVER HAVE TO DO THE LLC thing. Save money, hassle, insurance etc. That said, he could do likewise with South Dakota, Texas, Florida etc.

The only difficult part is establishing your "State of Residency". The IRS will look at your INTENT when declaring your resident state. Transfer your bank accounts, insurance, voter registration, driver's license, vehicle registration etc. and it's a done deal. It's easy but time consuming.

We use Americas Mailbox in Box Elder, SD and they take care of everything except your driver's license which you have to do yourself. There's no test etc involved if you have a DL from another State. Take your valid DL into their office and they print out your new one on the spot. Good for five years before you have to return to renew. Only requirement is an overnight stay in SD. Americas Mailbox has a campground on site to satisfy that requirement. If you don't want to take your rig to SD, fly in, rent a car, they have rooms for rent at their facility......Dennis

Very accurate statements. I'd add that we dropped our LLC when it became more difficult to get insurance. There are few insurance companies that will insure an LLC owned vehicle which can put you at a disadvantage when shopping for insurance.

KNOW the laws in YOUR state.
COMPLY with the laws in your state.
DOCUMENT the fact that you have complied with the laws in your state.
You will have no problems.

Most states are getting wise to those trying to avoid taxes and this has become more acute during the recession. If you live, work, and vote in Nevada then you probably should also register your vehicles in Nevada. Nevada is not especially RV friendly as to vehicle registration but it does not have state income tax so there is a trade off.

Contact a firm in that area. Requests the laws for the state you will domicile in. See if the law applies to you. Ex. in AZ, as long as our rig was not in our possession or out of state for 6 mths out of a calendar year (we kept fuel receipts) then we were ok with our rig being in an LLC.

It is all about knowing the Law for that specific state.
And while you are at it, look at the various business trucks in your area, especially with LLC at the end of the name. In AZ a business can keep it out of state License as long as it does not have a business or physical address in this state.

If you're a full timer and are not staying in any one state longer than whatever their limits are, you should be able to establish a residence where you want and change everything to that state. The LLC is deal where people try to avoid taxes in the state they live in and many, if not most, states have closed the loopholes that allowed this.
