Don't consider myself a naysayer either.

Just presenting facts about absorption fridges.

Simple technology that has been around since 1858

Biggest issue is proper installation...which some RV Mfgs just do NOT do/do NOT know how to do/choose NOT to do------results in cooling issues which then gets blamed on '**** absorption fridge'

Personally, I'm very satisfied with my Norcold Frig, I have taken some precautions, by installing a fire extinguisher behind the unit and I've also installed the ARP control. I've also had the unit inspected and it's in very good condition, plus I open the panel and inspect it every once in awhile. I can't remember and no longer have the info, but when I hear talk about an exchange Amish unit, if people realize they have more then one choice. When I looked into exchange units a couple year ago, I found the typical Amish unit, plus a gentleman that built a superior unit even to the Amish units (he happens to be Amish also, as I remember). I know if I ever have a problem, his is the way I would go. Sorry, I can't remember his name, but I'm sure doing some searching and you'd find him. Most of my traveling is done solo, so room in the frig is never a problem for me. I can understand a family needing more room and a residential frig would be helpful.

I' don't consider myself a naysayer. But in my case, I could do the cooling unit replacement myself for about $1200 in a day in my driveway vs taking it to a dealer, taking out a windshield with associated risks and lots of labor; at least a thousand more plus maybe weeks of waiting and iffy trim work.

And it still works on gas and performs better than stock perfectly well.

Don't listen to the nay sayers. Go with the residential fridge. It's completely awesome, won't go up in flames, never needs defrosting and has much more storage space for less money. How can you go wrong?

2 yrs. ago you bought a 12 yr. old MH so fridge is 14 yrs. old

During the first 12 yrs. you have NO clue how fridge was operated or actually maintained.
How many times was fridge operated off level?
How many times has burner/flue/flue baffle been cleaned?
Did the fans properly work?

And did the MH Mfg. actually follow the installation instructions/clearances requirements provided by Norcold.

Most lack of cooling issues........proper ventilation/draft.

Mine came in thru the emergency window on the driver's side slide. Used a forklift to lift it up and in and then removed the Notsocold the same way. From there it went in the dumpster. Good riddance...Dennis

The residential fridge MAY fit in the old opening - BUT...can you get it in thru the entry door?????

I found several that would be great for us - but simply would not get into the rig except via the front windshield!! (Yes, that was suggested by an RV dealer - we declined!!)

I found one that - with the doors removed - would go in and need only minor cabinet rework (new pantry - 9 inches wide and full depth and full height!! - win - win!!)

Do some close measuring. Before you purchase look at a counter depth model ref. as the box on my 23.5 cu.ft. Samsung is 24" with the doors off verses 31" on a standard refer. My entrance door is 26" leaving 2" to spare allowing it to come through after removing the drivers and passenger seats. The old 1200 lrim also went out the door after removing it's doors. I have no vested interest in Samsung but they will not void your warranty when installed in a RV as some other manufacturers do. They will also run with no ill effects on a modified sine wave inverter as the incoming power is rectified to a DC voltage and the compressor and cooling fans all run on DC. These components also are variable speed and operate more efficiently using less power. My refer is above the furnace and by building a steel platform bolted through the floor and lowering it we still can reach the top shelf. Also removed the old wall that was adjacent to the Norcold. Yes it was a fairly large project but as Dennis says "I have to micro wave the ice cream to make it soft enough to serve". Had $1100 in the swap and never looked back. My Dometic always stays under 35 degrees in cooler months and under 40 degrees in hotter months, why not just change brands and keep the gas operation during dry camping..
