New Magellan GPS

There are generally quite a few topic in here on GPS's and how to select your own route for them. Just today I got an e-mail from Magellan about a new Smart GPS. In the video that accompanied the e-mail it said you can do your route planning on your computer, tablet, or smart phone, and then wirelessly sink it to your GPS.

Since I haven't seen it in person I can't tell you how it works, but it does look a lot easier than having to wire the GPS to the computer and sync it that way. In looking at how they did it I don't think you even have to take the GPS out of the car or RV. It syncs through the Bluetooth on your smart phone.

It also appears to give you mobile commercials too based on your location, which may be a good or bad thing. One of the screens was showing gas stations ahead and the price of gas at those stations. That could come in handy. It was also showing little ads for restaurants and other attractions that are near by.

For those that are in to gadgets (like me) it may be a fun gadget.

I think this is the device msmith mentioned: Magellan SmartGPS. The idea of having advertisements and "valuable social information" inflicted on me while I drive sounds like the 5th circle of hell, but the idea of wireless connectivity between the GPS and PC sounds like an idea whose time has come. Garmin has had traffic and weather updates via a wireless connection to a phone or tablet data service. Now Magellan has gone further. Maybe this is the start of something.

    Thanks for posting.

If it sinks with the tablet, why not just use the free navigation that comes with most any tablet or smart phone for that matter?

Because the stand alone GPS unit just works better and is easier to mount on the dash.

If you try it let me know as I am still frustrated with the constraints of the existing units. I guess I just want more control and expect too much from artificial intelligence!

I think I'm going to go ahead and get one. Looks like they are about $200 to $250 depending on where you get them from. In a couple of months by business is going to require me to start driving more and going to different destinations on one day. Hopefully this will let me plan my route out on the computer to multiple destinations and then transfer it over to the GPS.
