Any time a diesel doesn't run right, the first thing to do is change the fuel filters. You might give that a try.
OP Changing fuel filters is one of the cheapest repairs you'll ever make. Make sure you first understand how to purge the air after changing the filter. Diesels stop dead when they get air nor will they restart while there is air, period, end of discussion.
