Newbie needs direction on replacing fuel filter 1988 Class C

just bought a 1988 Travel Master (Coachmen) Class C 27 FT. Ford Econoline 350 to restore. Engine has 30,000 miles and runs good. However, I have fuel problem when it goes up hill. I understand that there are 2 fuel pumps which I have yet to check out,

But my problem is that there is a fuel filter on the chassis which has 4 fuel lines attached. I am assuming there is a cartridge filter inside and I want to replace it. There are no part numbers on the housing. It only says Ford. The problem is that I can not get the housing to spin off so that I can get a new cartridge filter. I used an oil filter wrench and can not budge it. I then got a 3 foot pipe wrench and put as much pressure on it as I could without crushing it. No luck

So I'd like to buy a whole new filter but I can not find anything online. I dont think it is called a fuel filter. What is this thing called and how do I figure out what I need that will match the 4 fuel line connections.

Thanks in advance

Obie

I have a picture to post, but I can not figure out how to attach a picture. The image option wants a url which is not easy.

You must first upload your pic to a (free) hosting service such as Postimage or Photobucket. After uploading, you will have a URL to use so you can attach your pic to your comment.
  • In '88 we bought a new mh on an E-350 with the 460 cu. in. injected, that was first year that Ford injected the 460.
We drove it to Alaska, and purchased a spare fuel filter. We used that mh until the fall of '02 and never used that filter.
I have an '89 E-150 with the 300 six, I wonder if it might use that filter?

Anyway, The engine is a 460. It does have a pump attached to the frame near on the front right side. I dont yet know if it is fuel injected. Cant see anything when lifting the hoodas you know.

When I look on the driver door frame, I see an 86 on the Ford sticker.

I think I only have one tank.

It looks like this filter is designed to filter fuel as it goes to the engine and then there is a return line from the engine that goes through the same filter and returns to the tank

    Thanks again

If this Ford has Throttle Body Fuel Injection, it might have a low pressure pump in the tank feeding a high pressure pump on the driver side frame rail. Does this sound like what you have?
    Which Engine? 460? 351?
Do you have one gas tank or two?
What is the Model Year of the Ford Chassis itself, NOT the "Year Model" of the Coach?
Can you post a picture of the pump/filter assembly?
  • Here's the skinny on the fuel reservoir--it's part of the dual tank plumbing. It may be just fine. Unless you managed to take it apart, that is :)
