Norcold ice maker water over filling

I recently had maitance on the ice maker. It worked great for about 4 weeks. Now it is straining to pop out the ice cubes. I now realize that the water is overfilling and it is creating a sheet of ice on top of the cubes basically sealing them in. You can hear the motor straining to work to pop them out but it's frozen over.

Why would the water overfill?
Is there a sensor that is not working or needs to be adjusted?

Thanks for any input.

    Thanks for all the input.
First, this is the Norcold 120x-IMXX model.
No where in the manual does it talk about anywhere to adjust the size of the ice cubes. Nor can I find where I would take off the front panel. Under the fridge is where I can shut off the water.
I have been getting better water pressure at this camp site and just now realized I never attached the water pressure control attachment to the hose. Could this be causing too much water to enter cube tray?

ONLY if the pressure is OVER 65 psi. Doug

  • Thanks Doug for your description of the operation. I have water draining below the icemaker and now know what to look for.

Problem is on the 1200model Norcolds the icemaker end panel can't be removed without taking the whole icemaker loose and turning it 90deg. I did some measuring and drilled a 1/2" hole opposite the adjusting screw. Changed out the whole assembly recently and used the old drilled end cap on the new one.

Did the same thing when installing my new icemaker.

Remove the front panel (inside the freezer) and you should see a screw with a double sided arrow and +/- markings Like this + <--> - (or the other way around).

    Turn it towards Minus.

SEE my post before yours. Norcold Icemaker adjustment does NOT look like you described. It has no plus or minus markings and is on the side of the housing. Dometic and U line do look like you described. Doug

  • I would like to know what they did to claim "maintenance" on a Icemaker. The Icemaker water flow thru the solenoid is "timed" by the motor. The motor moves at a specified RPM thru the cycle and when it gets to the indent for the water solenoid valve as it turns it supplies 120 power to the solenoid for that few seconds. I have NEVER in 30 years of working on any type RV Icemaker(that numbers in the hundreds) had to modify the Water solenoid timing. I would suspect you have a solenoid that is NOT closing off completely and is slowly dripping water. IF the Solenoid allows TOO MUCH water into the mold, then the excess will overflow and fall into the catch bin. It will NOT stay on top and then freeze. If the solenoid water valve is seeping then THAT small amount will slowly drip on top and then freeze and accumulate that sheet OVER the existing cubes. Remove the water line coming out of the water valve and see if you see drops of water slowly drip out. If so, replace the water valve. Doug
  • On mine there is an ice cube size adjustment behind the front panel. IT is a timed fill so water pressure can affect the size.
  • The water shutoff valve may need adjustment. I can adjust the size of cubes by increasing or decreasing the water flow. Mine is a timed flow.
