Now retired: Pulling a camper, or, driving a motorhome????

Ok, here's the point of my post. About 15 years ago my uncle made a statement to me that when I retired I would need to look more to owning a motorhome because it is too difficult to climb into a large pickup and also to pull a travel trailer or 5th wheel. I now have enough aches and pains to certainly understand where he is coming from. But I just wanted to get a feel from those who know best, you who have been at it for awhile. Anyone here started with a TT or 5ver and wished a thousand times that you had bought a motorhome? Thanks.
  • I much prefer a TT - it's my "cabin in the woods";

    Arrive, set up and go sight-seeing; 4 days later, hitch up, get to the
    next location and repeat.

    I also like the TT floor-plan, the living room is at the back; so when we reverse into a spot, it makes it feel like we are on our own.
  • I went with class C after about 7 years trailer ownership.

    I prefer the motorhome. The trailer had one big advantage-pull it somewhere, stay a while, and drive the truck around to sightsee.

    The motorhome is faster to get in and go. I'm far more likely to take it on a one night or two night trip than the trailer. It is more user friendly in very hot or inclement weather-hitching, unhitching. It is easier to sightsee and park en route without having to disconnect or find extra long parking. As a solo traveler it is easier to back into a site alone and get setup after a long day of driving. It will fit in some small, leftover campsites. I prefer the motorhome to the trailer for rest stops, lunch or potty breaks, etc.

    It really is all good-just have to find what works for you. Often it takes an RV or two to find the one.
  • When we retired, we went from a 25 foot trailer to a motorhome. Several reasons:

    My joints no longer want to go through the set up and take down of a trailer.

    We like to take it slow and stop often to see the sights, much easier in a motorhome.

    Safety... If we need to use a rest stop, it's nice, and we feel safer, if we don't need to get out (especially if it's a "dark and stormy night").

    And, it's just such a darn comfortable way to travel.

    Oh, and we only got about 9 miles to the gallon in the F150 pulling the trailer... the last trip to Florida in the motorhome, we got 11.1 MPG. The V10 coupled with the new 6 speed transmission is awesome!
  • I got a class B+ about 2 years ago. We had a small TT and a F350 to tow with and I liked it. The other 1/2 however is the one who wanted to be able to go potty etc without stopping so we got what we got. I dont find much difference between the TT and the RV to be honest. Set up/take down are about the same and yes I have auto levelers but they like anything else are not exact in operation, plus like with a trailer ya need to make sure the area is solid enough to deploy the legs. I still put some 2x8's under the pads and try to get the rig level with other 2x8s as not all spots are level to begin with. I know many say just pull in hitch the switch and thats it, but I have found its not that simple at least for me. We also have a towed to mess with so you will/may still be hitching something up with an rv. I like the truck to travel in but yes it was a tad on the big side compared to the towed we now have.

    I always told folks I was not old enough to get a MH, still dont think I am but the wife thought otherwise. Either go with someone who has a trailer or rv and see what it takes. Rent one is also a possibility before purchase/choice. I drive a school bus so didn't want a class a of any configuration due to size and then later storage issues. Have family and friends with them but they are not my cup o tea.

    sned me a PM if ya have any questions
