Onan 6.5 LPG

Hi all
I have a 6.5 Onan LPG generator that starts and runs good but wont produce any power, all the breakers are good, I tripped them and then put them back, even the ones on the generator.. the inverter is good and works... the gen will produce erratic power sometimes when its cold then it smooths out and is good... but if I shut it off for a little while I get nothing..
I do exercise it every couple of months and it does the same thing...
Any ideas?
Thanks
  • I have the same generator. I've had to replace my voltage regulator twice in the past 10 years. Dirty rings or worn brushes can cause these to fail early. Now the rings and brushes have been cleaned, I'd replace the voltage regulator. Flight Systems makes a replacement part that is better designed and is cheaper than the factory original.
  • So I replaced the brushes and cleaned the slip rings... they have a reading of 25 ohms... which is in the range (20 - 30 ohms,) I am only getting 1.5 volts at the breakers... could this be the voltage regulator?
The engine runs great and is smooth.. right at 1800 rpm

Any other ideas.. short of taking it to Onan!
  • Make sure you don't have a LP leak, as that can cause interment power and loss of power.
  • Thanks for the reply... I'm going to replace the brushes because they do look a little worn and I'll clean the slip rings, but where is the control board? Is it replaceable?
    Thanks
  • Would suspect worn brushes or dirty slip rings.. The control board can also cause no output voltage.. A good battery is required to provide excitation voltage to the generator field.
