OK, thanks everyone. That's more comforting. I'm going to change the oil every 150 hours (per the manual) and change the spark plugs and wires every year.
IMHO changing the plugs and wires every year is a waste of money
(having a spare set of plugs and wires and perhaps a coil on hand IS a good idea !).

The small engine market went to electronic ignition back in the 80s or 90s. Spark plugs last almost "forever". Wires will last a very long time unless something is rubbing on them.
Fixing small engines is a hobby of mine. The most common problems are fuel related, with dirt in the carburetor being number one ! If possible run the fuel out of the carburetor of any small engine that is NOT going to be used for a few weeks. If it is going to be stored for a few months, drain the fuel. Use a flashlight and check the inside of the tank for any debris. If you see any, the tanks has to come of so that you can do a thorough cleaning.
Segue - I had not completely drained the tank on my 5000W portable home generator for over 5 years, probably less than 25 hours of run time in that period of time I was amazed that it would even start. Removing the tank and cleaning it was worth the time !
