Parking on new paver driveway

After many years of dealing with a small asphalt driveway, we are having it replaced. We expanded a portion to accomodate our small Class C. This will allow us to park 2 cars in the driveway now and have the MH off to the side. I will still be able to use my Sewer Solution to dump. My 30 amp/120v shoreline may come up a few feet short with the 25 foot extension, but there is plenty of cord onboard attached to the generator.
The contractor has layed in an 8 inch base along with 1 inch of sand. He has assured me the light (10,700lb) motorhome won't be a problem on the pavers. The questions I am throwing out there are: Will there be some pavers breaking under the weight? Do you use any boards or levelers to spred out the weight of the tires? Do these boards or levelers leave any discoloration on the pavers?
I have in the past done all the servicing myself on the MH and the old driveway had the scars to prove it. I guess most if not all service will have to be done elsewhere. I don't see me jacking up the MH anymore.
  • As an RV owner and a professional engineer, I would recommend that you place wide boards under your wheels when you park your RV. I would suggest you use 2" x 12" x 36". This will serve to bridge you wheel load pressure and preserve your driveway. This is what I have done on my own paver driveway. It has been in place for seven years with no issues. As per your question about breaking pavers, this will not happen. If the boards and RV are left in place for an extended period, you could have some staining that will wash away with a thorough scrubbing. On the other hand your tires directly on the driveway will permanently stain it.
  • My MH is heavier than yours. I park on paver bricks. They have settled after 6 years of 13k lbs rear axle setting on them. But none have broken. On my list is a project to remove the settled bricks and put fresh paver base down.
  • Thanks for the replies. Should be finished today at noon. I'm thinking later in the day. Has anyone used a sealer? The DW wanted a darker color as was shown in the brochure. But when the pavers arrived, got they were lighter. I call the manufacturer and the colors are not guaranteed and batches vary from one to another. It's stated in the brochure. Applying a wet look sealer will darken the paver color for up to 5 years a help prevent stains.
  • One nice thing about dry-layed pavers, if there is settlement over time, you can remove, fill and replace settled area. After a while, all settlement should be out of the base.
  • We park our Class A on pavers at our daughter's house and so far no settling. We got the same answer from the people that did the work. If it's done properly you should not have a problem. Our tires do make black marks but it power washes off. We don't put anything under the tires.
  • If they are really pavers they shouldn't break. Roads are made from them with no problem. If they are CLAY bricks they will absorb water and crumble.
  • You should have no problem if they compacted the base and ground. I pull a 68,000lb truck and trailer over my pavers and have Zero settling or cracks, they put 12" of compacted base under my pavers. Also keep extra pavers you can replace oil stained or chipped pavers by breaking out old and hammer in new.
  • They finished late yesterday, but still have to power wash it this morning. Then I get the final bill. I will wait until the DW gets home at 4:30pm to drive the MH into the new spot for her. I hope I have made the extension long enough.
