Possible water damage on front cap

W took our clacc C to a dealer shop for other work and I asked if they could fix a small gap by the rim of the front cap. The guy said there is water damage and it would cost $8000 to repair. How do I test the wood to see if there really is damage? I think I need to take the mattress out there and look around. The worker pushed up on the lower level outside and said it's soft to here and he showed me. What to do? I do wonder if the insurance will cover that but I want to investigate, even get another opion before I call the insurance. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Before I had my roof replaced, I had a small cabover leak that I had repaired. On the coach side (the side where the flag is) the RV tech removed a screw from the cabover trim. He removed the first screw from the underside, right after where the trim transitions from vertical to horizontal. The water started dripping out. He said that this is now your permanent weep hole. It's been that way for 2 years now, and since then nothing has dripped out of it.

    I with you on this, I'm doing a cab over replacement as well as one wall and have a ton of hours into it. MH's are hard to take apart.

    That quote actually sounds about right. I would guess I am 3/4 of the way through my cabover rebuild and am into it about 30 man hours. At RV repair center labor of $150 an hour, you are looking at $6000 (40 hours) in labor alone. Materials could push $1000 with badly rotted wood or steel. An $8000 quote is not a bad ball park guess.

    That sounds more like somebody that WANTED to price themselves out of the job.

    How can a person tell you how much damage and costs there would be without showing/telling you all damage. Just saying you have water damage and showing you a little bit isn't good enough. I would start by getting a second opinion after the first place shows you detail info on the problem. Having had roof damage by an accident, the service co. detailed everything that needed to be done.

    Thanks for that. Guess I need a second opinion on what a repair will cost. I did go pull up the mattress in the overhead area. Can't see anything wrong there so any damage is from the underside of the outside. What a learning process. No tree fell on it, just I didn't know to pay a place to check everything over before we bought. Or the small opening happened since we own. So you think insurance wouldn't cover repair. OK. Let's see what happens next.

    If the damage was from a tree falling on it the insurance co. would probably co ver it. This is just a common problem on Class C MHs. Most of the will leak there and cause rot in the wood unless they are kept perfectly sealed at all seams on the roof. I have had 2 Cs and 2 As. I will never again have a C that does not have a onepiece roof on the cabover.
