Power step

We keep our MH in a storage yard during winter. I charge the batteries every two weeks with the generator and run the motor. Now the last two times I did this the step would not come out when I turned the power switches at the door on.

"Before" charging I test the batteries and they had 6.2 on each (of 6) house batteries and 12.4 on the chassis. I do this to see how they hold a charge. According to the chart I have this is 75% charged. I would think this would be enough to operate the step. Both times after the generator was started the steps operated.

So my question for those smarter than I does there need to be more than a 75% charge to operate these steps? Could there be another issue to look at? During the summer months I never had this issue or last winter either.

  • 2 winters running I had a problem with my step operating in the cold. I had to use a heat gun on the motor to get it going. After replacing the motor, the steps now work as designed even at 0°. Try some heat, tap the motor with a hammer lightly, and if it works, buy a new motor
  • I would try and operate the steps while the generator is working - if it won't operate with the converter functioning it's likely a non battery related problem. Also - clean the step ground - it's exposed and subject to corrosion and likely one of the top reasons for step related problems.
  • The manual for the steps might provide a clue. It may state the minimum charge required for the steps to operate.
