Re-Sealing Windshield?

Several years ago I had the windshields re-set on our 96 Southwind. The shop removed both windshields, cleaned the gaskets and reinstalled the glass. They said the factory did not use enough sealant.
I've had no leaks or problems since they were re-set.

I would not use silicone. If it doesn't stop the leak, nothing else will stick to it properly, including more silicone.

You may want to consider taking it to a glass shop and having it repaired properly.

If not, I would use Dicor, for vertical surfaces, not the self leveling caulk.

Baloney. This will seal it for 25 years.

We had a air leak on the top seal of the windshield. The dealer used sealant to fill the gaps, this lasted 2 months. Took it back and they had a windshield specialist put a new seal in, this finally fixed the problem.

Also had about the same issue. Have a glass shop do it. Mine was done several years back and still no leaks. The gasket they set in is not cheap, but if torn or worn out, really needs to be replace or clean so that the glass can float in it.

I do have an air lead and it anoy's me. I tried to pin point the leak by getting some tape on it, it seemed to work for a while but the wistle came back.

I will be putting some black rubber, like door sealant, to fill the gap. The sealant must stay flexible in cold temp and this stuff is suppose to expand and retract as weather change, I think this is most important. I do not have a water leak but would try the same way.

Take it to a glass shop or better yet, call one and have them come to you. That's your best solution.

Some companies, like Monaco, did not use sealant on their windshields. Sometimes when you have an issue, it's better to pull it, clean it and reseal it with sealant. The only downside is that they can break when being removed. Typically, your insurance will cover it. After the first chip on my new Diplomat 11 years ago, I lowered the Comprehensive to $100.00 to cover windshield replacement. Sure enough, I went 9 years without an issue, but broke two in two months and the $100.00 deductible helped. Some states have no deductible for windshield repair.

As stated do NOT use silicone to seal your windshield or anything else as far as that goes. Somewhere along the seam, silicone will loose its adhesion and begin wicking water in like a pump. Silicone is good for appearances but never trust it to make a good water tight seal.

Take it to a glass shop and let them use their sealants and be done with it. And that's coming from a guy that never does all his own repairs - unless it's out of my league and take it from me, this is out of the league for almost all of us.

Okay, so the verdict is in... take it to a windshield specialist.... heard ya loud and clear!!

Mine is at an auto body shop right now. The glass guy is removing both windshields and resetting them. Only way to do it right. If they break they are covered by my insurance.
