Refrigerator Cabinetry Modifications

My Dometic RV refrigerator died quite a while back. I have since purchased a residential Maytag unit. At the moment, it is currently sitting in the RV where the Captain's chair normally is (the chair is sitting on the passenger chair).

Due to budgets in free time and extra money, I have not been able to put the refrigerator into it's proper space. One of the problems that I have yet to sort out is exactly how to deal with the cabinetry. The "wood" used in my '03 Damon is something like particle board with a wall paper coating???

The RV refrigerator had an exterior flange that covered the opening; so any dings and dents to the cabinetry during installation/removal were hidden.

And, while typing this post and thinking what to type, maybe providing a flange to the new refrigerator is the simplest answer. Even if I can't match the cabinetry look like factory, I can possibly HIDE the changes that I make.

Really looking forward to replies from others that have made the conversion.
  • I just did it in mine but only had to cut off 1/2 inch down one side and take a drawer out. Maybe you've just got the wrong size refrigerator. I shopped for one by width. That's the measurement that was important in my install. The hardest thing I had to deal with was the gas line. I relocated that to the outside storage so I could hook up a grill. I made a platform out of 2x4's and plywood for the refrigerator to sit on. I was able to screw the refrigerator to the platform by going through the old refrigerators outside vent. I think I'm going to change that side vent to a marine style hatch cover so air doesn't come in. It has good air flow from inside the RV. Also I found so trim at Home Depot that is the paper covered "simulated" wood that matches perfect. They have some colors to choose from that might work for you. Maybe you're just trying to put a square peg in a round hole and need to find a better fit. Somebody need to make a direct replacement.

PS: When you're done you'll love it! My Norcold sucked!
  • Any metal shop can fabricate a trim to go around the fridge and depending on what color the fridge is, it can be painted to match the fridge..If you're going to paint it, I'd go to Home Depot and get some aluminum strips, cut them to size, miter them, paint them and you're good to go. If your fridge is stainless, go to a metal shop....Dennis
  • On a previous RV, a TT, the Dometic died after a year and a half, but Dometic would not honor the warranty because we were not the original owner. Anyway, w took out the Dometic and replaced it with an Avanti residential (apartment size) refrigerator. It was a pretty easy swap. The Avanti was 2" wider than the original and about 6" taller. We removed the trim pieces, took off the paneling and inserted the new fridge. We then used the trim and paneling that we took off and retro-fitted the new one. It worked great until we sold the RV 3 years later.
