Replacement of roof on a Class A Motorhome

Hello to all. I have a A class Motorhome Hurricane 2006. I have to replace the rubber roof. I have the choice between a new rubber roof or a aluminium replacement roof. What is the best choice ? I need you help. Thank-you.

  • To Dale.Travelling. What cause this ? Probabelly a bad maintainance by the owner before me.
  • Thank-you to every one for the answers. I believe, I will with the aluminium one.
  • I had David's Permanent Coatings, Inc RVRoof.com Spray coat my roof. Makes a seamless roof, no maintenance and guaranteed for 20 years. I'm very happy with the results and coach is cooler and quieter. They are located is Green Cove Springs, Florida. Cost was $135.00 per linear foot.
  • Go with the aluminum. Will last forever and it will increase resale value. Aluminum roof is one of the main reasons I bought my MH. No need for replacment and no worries about tree branches and such.

I've had one aluminum, one fiberglass cap, and three of rubber. They all have to be cleaned and maintained, I prefer the Rubber, primary reason is flexibility and ease of cleaning.
  • All depends on how long you plan to keep the coach. An aluminum roof will out last the house under it but isn't completely maintenance free. Rubber roof will require much more care and feeding but should last at least a dozen plus years.

What's causing the replacement? I also have an 06 Hurricane and my roof is in great shape.

Also with an aluminum roof you can have it sprayed with Rhino Liner, the stuff they use to seal pick up beds.

  • You didn't mention whether or not if you were going to do it yourself or have it done. Through carelessness on my part, I have had and damaged both types over the years on tree branches and repair was about the same on both. With your unit being an '06 and a rubber roof will have more pliable-ability, I would go with a new rubber sheet. In spite of the cost, nowadays, I'd opt to have it done. I did do a replacement on a metal roof on a old Scottie semi-tear drop travel trailer years ago that we use as a closet/storage shed for DW when parked for a long term stay when we lived in a Toyota Dolphin. It required replacing all the plywood underlay and most of the 1 x 1 cross braces (rafters)due to rot . That was the majority of the work. Even though I bought corrugated aluminum RV roofing basically cut to fit on length and width it was still a lot of work. If you are going the DIY route, the link is a video on a guy who did it himself.
