Roadside Assistance - Tires

Thank you for your post, supercub. Good Sam Roadside Assistance always puts the safety of our members first. With that in mind, and to xctraveler's point above, we generally do not recommend repairing a flat tire.

I would not drive on a "repaired" tire. This is not a 4,000 lb car with plenty of extra weight carrying capacity in the tires. Our coach is within 1,000 lbs of the permissible weight on the rear axle. I repaired tire is an accident waiting to happen.

Will roadside assistance repair a flat in possible? or just replace tire?

Recent experience with Coach-net. Hydraulics failed in campground just outside Grand Canyon South Entrance. Sunday morning! Could not retract 2 slides or store jacks. With in 15 minutes of my call a tech called me and walked me through 30 minutes of attempts to locate and resolve the problem which failed through no fault of the tech. He promised to get a mobile tech out to us. I assumed it would be hours so I booked another night in the campground. Within the hour, as promised, Randall arrived and spent about an hour working on the system. It was clear we would not be able to fix it altogether, but he showed me a workaround that has kept us on the road happy until I get someplace to have an RVIA Certified Hydraulic tech work on it. Lost time actually none as we toured another part of the park we had thought to miss.

I could not be more impressed with Good Sam roadside assistance. My experience was an 81 mile tow of my 38 ft.diesel pusher, all
I had to do was sign a $1340 tow bill. Everything was handled by the very competent operator that I had made one call to. I would not travel with there service,having said that I am not slamming coach-net as I feel they are probably just as good.

I find that more than a little suspect, however, when there seems to be a hidden, secret limit on the number of service calls within some unspecified time period.

Rather, we try to resolve the root cause of the disablement with the best, most efficient service and equipment. Sometimes, we would in fact send a truck from 200 miles away - examples like Alaska come to mind.

In each case, we try to resolve as quickly as possible, but the resolution we send is based on numerous factors - actual cause for disablement, day of the week, time of the day, location of disablement, RV type, and the specific issues that need resolved.

I'm certainly not paying $300/year (about $129, I believe) and do you really think you could get your 40,000# RV towed to a service center for $500? Are you also aware that while truckers use 22.5 tires just like ours, the ratios are not the same. Many use 11R tires or a variety of metric sizes which are likely incompatible (and way too rough a ride) with RVing.

Lot of bigger RV are using 22.5 tires that semitruck use. No need to carry those as each tire shop have plenty. Than if you have smaller, harder to find size, why not have whole wheel? Steel rims are pretty cheap and even aluminium rims can be found cheaply.
Than just like each insurance, it should be evaluated. Do you really need it? I have been changing 180lb wheels few years ago and I hope I can still do it when I age. If not me -any tow truck driver will help me to install spare on my RV and local tow truck is covered for no extra fee by my AAA vehicle insurance.
Lastly paying $300 every year for the insurance to save $500 on service once in decade???? Take a piece of paper and calculate.

And then it depends on where your failure occurs. It takes a pretty well equipped service truck to be able to mount a truck tire at the side of the road.......and those just aren't always available within a reasonable distance, no matter who your service provider is.

Have you ever watched a guy mount a truck tire on to a rim? Usually it takes about 15 minutes using tire irons. That is all it took the one time I needed a tire changed. That is why many RV owners carry an unmounted spare. The only thing a service truck is needed is to carry the air compressor to add air after the tire has been changed.
