RV to power home temp

Does anyone use their rv to power their house during power outages?

  • I used to when the RV was parked by the old house back in the 90s. I split out the house panel into emergency and non emergency panels so I only powered the emergency panel by the generator. I used a transfer switch, and even had it on autostart for when I was gone.

Of course if I was gone with the motorhome, the house was out of luck :)
  • Hi,

I added a manual transfer switch that had six circuits. By choosing carefully, I had almost full functionality in the house. I was amazed at how much I could power from a Kipor 2800 Ti. I never came close to overloading the genny.

Have done it. no longer have a house.. HOW..
RV was modified by the addition of some 30 amp outlets one twist lock and two TT30s (THey have powered other people's RV's from time to time).

House was modified by addition of a GENERATOR TRANSFER PANEL and 30 amp inlet. also twist lock.

ONLY 120 volt devices could be switched over

ONE hall light we almost never used was left on MAIN

When the hall lit up... Time to switch back to main

WOrked great.. Likely about a thousand dollars for everything including professional re-wiring of house and replacement breaker panel.

Warm wife... (It was Jan 1 when power went out) Priceless.
  • Yep that's what they are for. I have, like others have said, use a good quality extension cord from camper to house then to just the important items. Worked fine should be no problem.
  • I run an extension cord from the RV to the house, under the door, and plug in the refrigerator. Easy cheap and safe.
  • There are ways, legal and illegal ways to do it.
Legal you use a transfer switch to lockout power company connection.
Illegal you shut off main breaker and connect from gen to house wiring with jumper plug into dryer/range plug for 240 V.
I have 3 generators and had to get by from 4 hours to up to 12 days with different storms.
  • Sort of, I just run an a extension cord, enough, for some lights and the coffee pot. House has a gas fireplace so need to power heat
