Scan Guage

Has anyone used a Scan Gauge on their diesel pusher? Do you recommend the purchase of one and is it cost effective?

George
  • People here on the forum use it. They say they like it. I say it's just another gadget to take your eyes off the road.

    Just me.
  • I use it mainly for water temperature (Digital over Analog) gauge on my CAT engine and Freightliner chassis. Including displaying the fault codes.
I am slowly getting used to the trip functions. Functions such as GPH and such are not accurate, mainly because CAT, MB or Cummins do not have a turbine flow meter to measure fuel flow. But you can calibrate to be close.

  • I've had mine for about a year. It is mounted on the top of the dash, just above the speedo. It works well, but my issues with the ScanGauge are: display is hard to read with sunglasses, and it displays only 4 metrics. I'll be selling it when Silverleaf introduces their Bluetooth device for tablets.

I assume that the Scan Gauge has a LCD screen. Nearly all sunglasses are polarized just right to block the polarized light from a LCD. You can buy un-polarized sunglasses or ones polarized 90 degrees off from the common ones. I did the latter to read my laptop.
  • My scan gauge if fun, however, the hassle of resetting for fill up is a pain, but for the other features it is great.
  • I find it useful to monitor transmission and water temps and oil pressure when climbing grades. I mount it the gps base. Good luck.

I prefer a ultragauge, bigger screen and less expensive.
  • I switched from Scanguge to Ultraguage on my previous motorhome. Definitely a better display. But, it won't work on a diesel pusher since Utraguage is OBDII only.

I have a ScanGauge D on my '96 Safari, with the 250hp 3126 Cat, and I personally would not buy one if I had it to do over again.

1.) It was a PITA to install because I had modify the SGD connecting plug to fit my diagnostic port.

2.) I had to send the first one back and get a newer version because the boost gauge display was way off.

3.) On my coach it will NOT display the trans fluid temp, (TFT)...(that's not Linear Logic's fault, but the fault of SMC, the coach builder.

4.) I have given up trying to mount where I can see and reach it from the drivers seat.....(it continually falls off/down).

A "gadget guy" MIGHT find it worthwhile but to me it was/is not worth the $$$, (to much trouble).

IMO, most coaches give us enough problems without paying $170.00 to add another!

I'm very disappointed with mine, (aka: I'm NOT a "happy camper").

  • I had thought about getting the ScanGauge but I'm a plug and play person. I have the Edge Insight CTS in my Ford PSD so I went with the SilverLeaf 330. Tells me everything I need to know on my bachup camera and it is big enough where I can see and read it in real time.
