I had a similar problem -- discovered that the washer drain hose extended too far into the drain, displacing the water in the P trap, allowing the sewer gases to come into the living area. Solution was to raise and secure the washer drain hose so that it only extended 1 to 1 1/2 inches into the drain, allowing the water in the P trap to do it's job of blocking the sewer gases.
