Shenandoah Nat'l. Park question

DW and I are planning a trip to the Shenandoah Valley area this October and plan to make day trips (in toad) on the Skyline Drive. Been looking online at CG's in the area but haven't been able to decide on one. Most appear to be reasonably good CG's per the RV Campground Review site. Would like to stay at one that affords relatively easy access to Skyline Drive hopefully about midway. Any suggestions? Thanks, Larry...
  • Country Waye in Luray. It is now a KOA but it is a good place near the middle. I drive the drive in my coach all the time and you might consider driving part of it that way to get there too.
  • Hey Fellow Gator!

We also stayed at the Luray KOA when we toured the Skyline Drive. You can find some pictures of the campsite as well as others of our stay and day trips on our blog.

We frequent the Shenandoah Area every fall season to catch the tree colors. Have never stayed at the COUNTRY WAVE RV Resort but have driven thru it to look around. Following the Shenandoah River through the valley is always a special drive for us.

We are setup for camping off the power grid and always stay at LOFT MOUNTAIN inside the SKYLINE DRIVE but of course it does not have hookups. It does have fresh water available to be toted from the bath room buildings.

Our best place to stay is the SHERANDO LAKE at Lyndhurst VA (Exit 96 on US64 near Waynesboro) which is located at the southern end of the Shenandoah Natl Park and where the BLUE RIDGE Parkway starts up. SHERANDO LAKE has both hookup and non-hookup sites. Easy access to the Blue Ridge parkway which will feed the SKYLINE DRIVE parkway. A word of caution however SHERANDO LAKE is very popular and getting reservations might be difficult for you.

By the way the best places we found for really good fall foliage is West of Harrisonburg up along the Virginia and West Virginia wooded state line. Definitely worth the effort to check it out... The lower elevations between Harrisonburg and just below the State line is really worth the drive for us.

All of this might be too far SOUTH for your planning.

  • Also Lynchburg KOA a bit further south, puts you on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Will post a review after we stay there again next weekend.

    Hey back fellow Gator!

Always good to hear from a Gator especially for those of us who, unfortunately, live in or near Tallahassee!! Great photos on your blog. Thanks!
  • We stay at Shenandoah River State Park, lower cost than KOA, with 50 amp and water hookups.
  • Another vote for Country Waye in Luray. it is right in the middle, 10 - 15 minutes to the park entrance. Two or three miles to the Caverns if you are into that. Incidentally there is a great car museum located at the caverns. It is about the only campground that I know that stayed the same after being bought out by KOA.
