Slide Out switch extremely touchy

I've got a 2004 Georgie Boy Cruise Air XL diesel pusher that we are in our 2nd year of having and really like it. I'm having an issue with the In/Out switch for both the bedroom and the family room slide outs. The break switch is fine but for the In/Out switch (both of them), you have to push them in just right for the motor to kick in to take the slide outs in or out. The family room is a lot worse than the bedroom.

Does this sound like an issue with the switch or a mechanical issue with the slide outs? It's been like this since we got it. The family room slide out you really have to push in on the switch just right and it's not pushing in on the switch all the way, it's about half way or 3/4 of the way in for the motor to kick in.

I thought I'd get some feedback on ideas/suggestions before I figure out how to get the plate off the switch to check it and replace. If it has to do with the motor, that's out of my league and I'll need to take it to a RV shop but don't want to pay that kind of money unless that's really what it is.
  • I just used a jumper between the middle post and bottom post and middle post and top post - it ran the slideout in and out perfect. So it's got to be the switch. Just ordered 2 new ones off Amazon, should be here before I leave for Myrtle Beach on Friday.

Thanks fellas, appreciate the help on this!
  • First question is whether the rock switch is merely conducting power to close a relay or actually conducting enough power to operate the slide motor.

If the first, easy to diagnose-- use a small jumper wire at the relay from "always hot" large lug to the positive "signal" terminal. If everything works as it should, then you have a problem with the switch or wiring from positive to switch or switch to relay.
  • Thanks for the advice, Will! I took the switches apart tonight, it's a 3 panel. I'll try the contact cleaner to see if that works, otherwise I'll order a new one, they were pretty cheap when I looked them up today.
  • My slide switch was acting pretty much as described by the OP. Spraying some contact cleaner in the small gaps around the rocker switch fixed it up for me. It now operates like new.
  • Ok cool, I'm hoping it's the rocker switch since that's the cheapest and easiest. I always thought those were kind of all or nothing where you had to push the switch all the way down to work. I'll just have to be careful to pop the switch cover off to get to the actual rocker switch, I'm assuming they'll just pop off with a putty knife or screw driver?
  • Sounds like the rocker switch. If you take it out, they are easy to check with an ohm meter. They are usally prety inexpensive to replace anyway.
  • I had an issue where the slide switch on our 2001 GB Landau was getting harder to operate. I found an exact replacement switch online for about $12, and changing it took about 5 minutes. Problem solved.
  • I'd pull the switch and jump it and see if it fixes it or still the same...
