Slide Problem Continues

I have a 2002 Winnebago Journey DL on a Freightliner chassis. My jack and slide system is the 310 series from HWH. So far, I have been in contact with HWH and Winnebago, but have not had any results yet. My rear slide has been having problems and it has been quite the ordeal. The rear slide is extended and will not retract. Following the instructions in the manufacturer's manual, I opened the vales release and tried to push the slide back in. The rear portion will slide, but the front section seems to be jammed. I also have a fluid leak and I have come to believe that it is where the pressure hose connects to the fixed end of the cylinder. I have found no way of getting to that particular point unless I remove the floor or drop the diesel engine and transmission. Neither is really an option. However, driving about 1000 miles back to the US with the slide out is not an option either. How can I get to the end of the cylinder?

    Hi Gary,

I've had the cover off the bottom section of the bed more than once and though I can see where the ram must be, I still cannot find the end of the ram or a hose getting to it. What I DO have is the whole 120 volt and several bundles of cable going to it. A friend with a Tiffin product told me that when he needed repairs at the Tiffin factory at Red Bay, they removed a panel and the whole assembly was there to work on. I'm still hoping for something from HWH or Winnebago to give me the magic key to getting to the problem. My fall back solution is to disconnect all the hoses from the rear slide and push the slide in Then I will drill a few hole through the floor of the slide and secure the slide in place with lag bolts. Then, somebody back in Florida can have the job of doing the actual repair.

Paul, I could not remember if you had the 36 or 34 Journey. I was thinking you had the same floor plan that I had which was the 36GD. I do remember some wires in that area but they did not block the ram or the hoses and fittings going to it.

At any rate, it sounds like a vexing problem and I sure hope you get it resolved.
  • Sounds to me that there is an internal seal the blew within the ram causing it to circulate fluid within itself causing no in or out movement, as you mentioned you may have to disconnect the hoses that lead to the cylinder then retract the slide and secure, good luck...

  • Paul, if your coach has the North-South bed, the main ram for the slide is under the foot of the bed and should be easily accessible from under the bed. Lift the bed and you should have a panel that is removable at the foot just behind where your electrical panel is. If you remove that panel on top of that space, you can access the ram and the connections.

That slide has a smaller ram at the back and, since you say the front of the slide is jammed, the problem must be in the main ram under the bed.
  • Question, most Hyd system use only 1 ram for the small slide. Since you can move the rear and not the front. Indicates that you can release the hyd pressure. So what is jamming the front side? Have you move the slide seal gasket and made sure the slide is not rubbing on the side of the rig?
Is there only 1 rail or 2 rails?
I don't believe it is impossible to get to the ram by removing the motor or floor. Have you look at the sub floor from within the storage compartments?

Sorry I cannot be of further help
