Slideouts and Carpet vs Hard flooring

In our seemingly never ending quest to buy a older Class A, we have run across a few with slideouts. Our old 5th wheel trailer had a slideout as well. They all seem to have carpet-or at least partial carpeting. Why? Why do slideouts have carpeting on/around them? Is it because they flex or? And what should we avoid if looking at one with a slideout?
TIA
  • Sometimes it involves how the slide moves across the floor of the cabin, and in my rig the slide uses the carpet as a friction base to ease the movement of the slide. If I were to re-surface the cabin, I would have to put in new carpet anyway, or the bottom of the slide would chew up the new planking or whatever.
    HTH.
  • The slides can't handle the weight of tile. But I did see the new Newmar has tile in slides.

As one salesman said to me, " they carpeted everything back then."

  • Because the type design of those particular slide rooms and how it glides along the main floor will not cause damage when gliding over carpet. Once Tile/Wood/Lino was optioned they designed the slide rooms with rollers or a system where the room would not damage that type material. Doug
