Sluggish electric awning

This is a continuation of last years concern! I have a dometic electric awning. Love it and would never switch to manual. Last summer it seemed sluggish in rewinding. Tech said it just needed lubrication and it seemed better. Getting ready for this years trip it was worse and then seemed to die so we replaced the motor. It seems to be doing the same, but it is not dead, just sluggish. Any experience as to what else it might be?
  • Have several years of experience with the same problem with mine before it was fixed. Can do a little trouble shooting by disconnecting the electrical wires at the motor. Then install temp jumper wires from the control box to the motor oy you can us a separate 12 volt battery. Mine worked fine with the jumper wire. My problem was a bad splice at an outlet between the box and the motor. Other problem could be that wire is too small. Awning stops when it "amps out". Mine was temperature sensitive. In hot sun it will amp out sooner than when cool. The manufacturer worked on it three times, a dealer twice before awning manufacturer rep told me where to start looking. Finally fixed after 4 years. e .
  • The OP has an excellent question and it might affect a lot of us like it does me. If I haven't used mine within a few weeks I have to nudge it from it's starting point with a long pole. It doesn't have a problem retracting .... just that initial starting point.
  • Check the awning and make sure that it isn't bent. If it goes at normal speed and the slows a lot and the speeds back up and then slows again, that is probably the problem. I had to replace my awning because of that. The hardware and motor were still good.
  • Beyond mechanical, how about electrical? If you are not getting the full amperage to the motor when you hit the switch it will not operate at its full potential. I have a very old Freedom electric awning, and my problem was just that, the voltage made it to the motor, but not the amperage. After some digging I found a bad ground and a failing relay (my issue was sluggish and randomly unresponsive.)
  • OP here. It is sluggish mostly on retracting and needs a push. Wouldn't a ground problem be seen in attaching the new motor?
