SR 299 in N Cali

Done it in my 40 ft funmover towing a jeep. Tight, doable but was exhausted when I got to Trinidad from Trinity Lake. You need to watch all angles of the rv.

I camped at a campground called Bushay Campground right on Lake Mendocino with my 35ft travel trailer last summer. There is a site within that has power (site B094) that is hard to find on reserveamerica's website - unless someone tells you about it like I just did. The site was 60+ ft long (shows 30, but trust me, I didn't disconnect my truck and had 20+ft behind me). The only issue is the trees all need some trimming. Not a problem, but just a heads up. Bushay campground is on the 20 a few miles before the 101.

Thanks guys. Williams has a nice little diner IIRC. Maybe a layover there for the night but I don't see many places to camp, err park for the night.

I would take I-5 to just past Sacramento and take hwy 20 over to 101.

This question comes up frequently so I saved this. Just reverse the route when going West to east.

Take Highway 20 West out of Williams. 37.1 miles. Williams is at I5 and Highway 20.

Watch for Highway 53 as you drop down a hill after a fairly long climb. Easy climb and multiple lanes.
Turn what would be South onto 53. You will go about 8 miles. Look for the sign to Highway 29 which leads to Kelseyville. This is a nice road and will become freeway in a few miles. Eventually you are back to two lane for a short distance and will come to a stop sign. You are back to Highway 20 again. This leg is about 30 miles. Turn left and enjoy the beautiful drive right to 101

This route will bypass the two lane twisting and winding on the North side of Clear lake. If you want a good view of the lake go ahead and stay on 20 all the way to 101.

I'm a definite no on the 299 route. Forty footer and a toad. No thanks.

Here's another vote for either Hwy 20 or US 199, with a slight preference to Hwy 20. I didn't like 299 when I drove it in a VW bug!

199 over 299 any day of the week. I like the curves on 299 but it is 31/2 hours any way you drive it.

I didn't like that road. It is plenty big enough, but it was surely more elevation than I thought it would be. I towed my 35ft travel trailer over it in the summer. When I went back, I went back over the 20 out of Williams and over to Fort Bragg.

BTW, that 15 mph twisty climb is just about completely rebuilt. Much nicer section now.
