it could be the speed sensor on the tailshaft of the trans or the wiring near the connector. the vibration on the wire harness can cause a wire to break between the main harness and the sensor causing erratic operation also check the connection for corrosion also does the odometer register the correct millage if it does the speedo head is probably defective
