Switching from Synthenic to Dyno Oil?

I have a Workhorse Chasis with the Chev 8.1 engine. It has a 22000 miles. The previous owner has been using Synthenic oil. I've been thinking of switching to Dyno......what are the pros and cons of switching? Thanks
Brian
  • I drive about 5000-6000 miles a year. That will increase in another year after I retire.

How many miles do you intend on putting on it yearly???
  • Manufacturers recommendations are based on AVERAGE usage for that size engine. The vast majority of diesel engines ARE NOT made to be used in the manner ( hours or miles) that motorhomes are used. One year I had a whopping 17 miles on mine...another a total of 30. You think Im doing an oil change for a 30 mile round trip. Guess again!
  • Synthetic oils are suppose to be better because they do not break down as fast as dino oils, but that is why they cost a lot more, and the oil changes are further apart.

On my coach I just use the Rotella T 15w-40 dino oil. Works for me.
  • I don't know about your situation, but every diesel I've owned, the engine mfg required (at a max) a one year oil change interval (I've never been able to max out the maximum mileage requirement). So, I've always figured that going to a synthetic didn't provide me with any additional gain and I've always just stuck with Shell Rotella T 15w-40 dino oil.

I've never read anywhere that going from synthetic to dino is detrimental to a diesel engine.

  • There is also a synthetic blend that is a comprise between the two oils. Synthetic oils are superior but the cost is a consideration. Changing from synthetic to regular oil should not be an issue. Most synthetic oils are compatible with regular oils now. In the early years some did not mix well. Some old timers still say not to mix but the manufacturers say its okay to mix. Don't believe anyone that tells your that you need to "flush" all the old oil out before you switch. Good luck.
  • Since the price is about the same why would you degrade?

That is a rare engine so I would give it the best. :)
  • There is according to some no difference except longer oil change intervals. Personally I have recorded about 1MPG increase in fuel economy using synthetic.
