Switching to 4-flat towing

Just bought a 2017 Chev Colorado and think I'll tow it 4flat rather than on a dolly. Looking at a BlueOx system. Would like input as to if BLue Ox is a good system. Google reviews seem to show that they are. Also looking for a good, easy to use braking system. BlueOx offers a system called Patriot... Also, DW question....when towing 4 flat with the 4wheel in neutral, does the odometer on towed vehicle register miles? I just want an easy to use system without having to do alot like pull fuses, etc.....

THANKS

  • Blue Ox has a good reputation, I have used Roadmaster myself. With the last (2) cars I've towed the Roadmaster base system, IMO, was better engineered, easier to install, and better concealed when not towing.

When I was getting my Fusion ready to tow Blue Ox released their kit before Roadmaster did. After looking at the Blue Ox kit I decided I'd use a tow dolly before I'd hack up my car the way it needed to be to install the Blue Ox kit, and I'm not a fan of a tow dolly even a little.

With that said, sometime in the near future I should probably get my F150 ready to tow. I'll look at both Blue Ox and Roadmaster to see who has which kit I like better this time around.
  • We towed a 2008 Chevy Colorado 4x4 many miles. The odometer does not register miles. We use the Roadmaster Falcon II Tow Bar that stows on the RV. Roadmaster will service their tow bars at rallies. Great company. Never had any problems. Make sure that you do have it serviced every 2 years or 20,000 miles. You can call Roadmaster for where to have it serviced. We are on our 2nd tow bar. Roadmaster rebuilt the first one and then we replaced it based on their recommendation of replacing the tow bar at 70,000 miles.
  • I wouldn't use Blue Ox for anything, too many broken welds, and component failures for me. Look real hard at Roadmaster or Demco for baseplates and towbars and RVi3 for a braking system.
  • Read your owner's manual to insure your vehicle is towable four down. I had to coast down a hill with engine off and key on in my Edge to find out it did not accumulate mileage while being towed. I use the Blue Ox tow bar and base plate. I'm happy with the set up. My braking system is the SMI Stay in Play, works great. I have a charging line from the coach to keep the dingy battery charged.
  • Blue Ox is good stuff. I prefer the RVi brake system. I doubt you have a choice on whether to flat tow, every 4wd I've seen says do not tow on a dolly.
  • Have been towing with blue ox tow bars and base plates for 20 years. Had three tow bars. One I upgraded due to increase in weight, one wore out, now on the yhird. I'm not going to any other brand.. mileage should not register/ increase.
  • Is your new Colorado 2wd or 4x4? Can't flat tow the 2wd, correct?
