Tag Axle Tires.

I'm looking at starting to replace my 6 yo Toyo 12RX22.5 tires. As of this moment my thinking is to replace the fronts this year and the rears next year. According to my weights all my tires are moderately loaded so the current tire size is a good choice.

My question revolves around the tag tires. They are so lightly loaded I'm almost off the chart at the low end with the minimum 70 psig pressures. (4960 lb's/tire) and an axle wt of 9,000 lbs. At my next weighting I may reduce the tag pressure some more...say to 8000 lbs which would mean I'd be even more over-inflated.

Is there any particular reason not to drop down a tire size or two. for example a 10R X 22.5 would be 4000 lbs each at 70 psig. This might take some of the roughness out of the ride in the rear. In addition I might chose a tire with a sidewall that is less stiff that the Toyo.

Like I say, just thinking and I'm sure others have had a similar issue.
  • As said I'd move the front to the tag position and have them checked out at that time inside while off the rim. In regards to the light weight mine also by the charts should have the minimum inflation by weight but the les scwab tire dealer ( who does a lot of motorhomes ) refused to go that low and I heard the same from another brand dealer,.90 was the lowest they would put in telling me the tag has extreme lateral force on it and low inflation would cause failure. Not sure if that's true but it made sense to me and I've run 90 since with no tire wear issues.

Thanks for the reply's. For some reason the tag tires are different that the rest and...for unknown reasons, the PO used on/off road extra heavy duty tires designed for concrete trucks, and the like. As for the wear pattern, tough to tell with only 10K mile on them even though they're 6 yo as they have a very deep tread so basically they look like new.

About using the tag tires as a spare, tough to see how that would work since I can't drive more than ~15 mph with the tag up and I would still have to buy a new tire.

Still, something to consider and these tires in this service might just last for many years without issue.

I wouldn't try to drive any distance with the tag lifted as you may be over loading your drive axle.

We used our tag tires as 'spares' when I received a bad alignment from Colton Truck in Colton, CA. I didn't notice the severe where until 2,000 miles away from CA.

Our front tires started wearing noticeably on the inner edges on both. So, I had a shop in Nashville (TAFA...Tire Axle Frame & Alignment) switch the front tires to my fresh looking tags. All was well for a couple of years until it was time for new tires due to age.

TAFA gave me the best alignment that Dynasty ever had.

I would try and keep all the tires on the coach the same size just for ease of changing if needed.

Assuming all 8 tires are the same, I would swap the fronts and the tags that have not been doing much for the six years. Doing this will let you inspect the insides and then in four years replace all.
  • If you're steers are good, put them on your tag. If you put new steers on, say 5 years, and rotate back to tag. You will only ever have 6 tires to replace. We use our tractor steers, to trailers.

  • Putting different size on tag will make the wheels non-usable in other position.
I always consider the 2 wheels on liftable tag a potential spare wheels.
  • What do the wear patterns look like on your tags? If they are wearing even, leave them alone. If they are wearing in the middle only, like they are over-inflated, then think about a change.
