If you watch the video, the base plates are still securely attached to the front end. The front end is what separated from the car.
If you look at the picture that is with the video, it clearly shows the front end of the vehicle with the base plate that attaches to the tow bar. The video says that this was recovered TWO miles down the highway.
Something is just not adding up. If the front end was jerked off of the vehicle, it should have remained attached to the tow bar and not been free to bounce down the highway.
The car would be free but the front bumper and base plate would have stayed with the RV.
Another scenario is that if the tow bar pins came disconnected and the jerk on the safety chains yanked the front end off of the car. The base plate then came loose from the safety chains and was left on the highway.
Just like our Jeep Liberty there is no bumper, when that front cover comes off, there is the radiator and end of frame, If my base plate breaks from frame, it will jerk the front cover off with it. fastened on with plastic rivets. I know, put mine on myself, and changed all bolts to grade 8, and used larger flat washers where needed and red Loctite on all bolts. My Blueox base plate is the bumper now, cant see it but it is there. plus safety cables from plate to frame. Like them better than a break away switch. If mine comes loose, would rather have it bumping the back of MH till I can get stopped, than have it locked up in the middle of a interstate. Just my thoughts.
But if the MH hitch breaks off that's a different story, need to look at safety cables there to, or just check hitch very often.
